I really don't understand the issue. If you were a Mormon then you'd HAVE to insist that God was male. However I don't see how a transcendant unique self-sufficient deity would have a gender as we understand it.
Quite frankly I think you are the one who should apologise for your arrogance in putting yourself forward as God's representative in this matter.
But you DO try to understand God's nature - and you do so by assuming that the Biblical references (written by humans, not God !) are God telling us that He is literally male. Try an alternative view - the passages describing God as male are not a literal truth - rather they reflect the posiitons of the genders within the society of the time. Our society is different and those distinctions are very heavily eroded and so there is no insult.
