Buz, can someone explain to me why an eternal, omnipotent, and omniscient being would have a male or female sexual organ?
Or do you make the distinction between gender and sex? Gender being male or female, and sex being man or woman. Of course, though, the only way you can do that is to live in a specific culture in which you can reference gender characteristics with a certain sex. Then you could have a certain woman act like the majority of men and call her a male woman. Do all the Abrahmic religions just mean that God is male(gender)compared to their culture? Or that God is a man(sex)? Also, I don't see why an eternal deity would be pissed off when someone calls it "she", considering it doesn't show itself and that it doesn't make sense for an eternal deity to have a sex. And if in some cultures the attributes of God in the Bible are those of majority of women, or the attributes don't necessarily indicate a sex, I don't see why it would mind being called he/she/it. Let me get this straight:
We're talking about an entity that creates life, nurtures its children, has a son with no mate, and has enough unconditional love for every being in the universe. Are these truly masculine qualities to you, Buz? Isn't it just possible that the Bible mistakenly refers to God as "he" because it was men who wrote it? No, of course, it's not possible for the Bible to be mistaken about anything, even when it is.

I think Schraf has a point. Those Commandments (they're in Exodus somewhere) are a dead giveaway: "I am the Lord your God, I am a jealous God. You shall have no other Gods before me. I brought you out of Egypt and you will not worship graven images. I am the Lord your God and you will not take my name in vain, etc."
See what I mean? Just like a broad. ------------------The bear thought his son could talk in space about the time matter has to rotate but twisted heaven instead. -Brad McFall

I think Buz might be missing the point here... Was Schraf necessarily talking about the Christian god? There's any number of goddesses out there who wouldn't think twice about that post.
But if it was a reference to the Christian god, I'd think Buz is definitely over-reacting. If he/she/it made us in his/her/its image, well of course he/she/it must have a sense of humour! The Rock Hound

buzsaw writes: That's a no brainer, Sidelined that one would show less respect for deity than would be considered for a fellow human. Unless of course Schrafintor honestly did not know the gender of God (not taking the words of the Bible at face value for various reasons) and attributed the gender that she had the most respect for. Now i’m making an assumption here, but is it really that far fetched that Schraf would respect a female in power more so than a male?

And just how much respect do you commonly show, buz, for the Invisible Pink Unicorn (PBUHHH!)? Or Eris? Or Coyote?

Mmmmm, I'm beginning to see why you people manage to swallow that impossible evo pill. One more time before the sack..... Now read what I'm sayin VERY carefully and T H I N K, Ned. All 12 or 14 hundred or so pages of his book refer to both him and his son in the male gender. I'll leave you with that. Try REAL HARD to think of why he would prefer being refered to as he refers himself. Think REAL HARD, now Ned and as I hit the hay I'll pray REAL HARD in the name of his son Jesus that you'll be able to fathom this very DEEEEEEP concept. Ok?
How about another DEEEEP concept. God told Moses "I am the I am." The one time God could have picked a sex and didn't. The references to HIM was put in by male scribes and human writers, not God referencing his/herself. If anything, God is androgenous.

nosyned writes: It seems to me that God can't possibly be either male or female. She/He is the god of all humans right? If you mean in the general sense, then god must be all/or no species as well. Originally God had a wife, who was written (mmmm maybe I should say "talked") out of existence. In the writing of the Bible God could very well be indeterminate (as loudmouth accurately pointed out). However, many Xtian denominations point to the Bible for other quotes which make him male. In truth (of wording), God made MAN in his image. It was not humans, it was man. He later constructed a woman to be man's companion. Thus God is like man. While God's jealous rages do indeed sound like a broad, I must admit that many men act this way too. How many men don't want to see their women with other guys and so go blow the other guy away (and sometimes the girl too)? The next question which arises of course is if he has genitalia what does he do with it? Perhaps his lack of a sex partner explains his jealous anger. And if he has genitalia just how big is it? Could God make his cock so big that even he can't stroke it? Or can He give himself an infinite number of cocks? That could explain how he manages to screw so many people so often. Though size may explain why it hurts so much. Either way, after looking at the universe and what he's done with, I am convinced God sure had some balls. ------------------holmes [This message has been edited by holmes, 11-05-2003]

I had heard a man give a feminist backed justification that St. John IS a woman (at an Episcopalian C. in Leesburg Va.) but this particular person refused to name Gademer as the orginator of hermenutics which was used in the session to justify the claim, That's all that was behind it. Here is a link to this topic, perhaps my light reading of other EvC posts got in the way. God Bless. Brad.

He's so narrow-minded that I strongly suspected that he wouldn't understand I might have been referring to the Goddess. Of course, to Buz, referring to his God as a female is obviously considered a grave insult. Speaks volumes to his attitude towards women and things female, eh? Buz, if your God is strictly male with no female attributes at all, does that mean he will never stop to ask for directions, and leave his toenail clippings all over the bathroom floor?

You know,it just struck me that a lot of the bible could make sense if we assume that the big guy God is going through a messy divorce. He creates the universe, she gets everything in the settlement except Earth which is where he is stuck for all eternity.
No wonder his state of mind is so scattered, swinging from violence to mercy and back again. It also goes along way to explaining why there are so many lawyers in hell. [This message has been edited by sidelined, 11-05-2003] [This message has been edited by sidelined, 11-05-2003]
