This site about the survey makes the following statement: “If you break it down over five-year chunks, each age group is a little less religious than the one before it,” he said.
One question I always have when I see results like this is whether it really implies that the country will become less religious every five years or that each age group become more religious as they age (or some combination of the two).

The usual trajectory for developed nations is that each generation is less religious than the last. So as the older population is replaced by the younger, the religiosity declines.
There are complicating factors though. Immigration from less advanced countries skews the data as immigrants transfer their beliefs inward and breed faster than the indigents. If you look at the UK you see that although declining, Christianity is bolstered by Catholic imigration from Poland. Islam too benefits from higher than average birth rates. If you look at the world as a whole, you find religiosity as a % of total population is actually increasing as large, enforced atheist populations like China and Russia are given more liberty of beliefs and the less developed countries breed faster than the more developed. At the library where I hang out, there's a large group of students from a local Muslim school that comes in every week. What strikes me is that though most of them are non- white and the girls wear hijabs, they're just like any other Canadians of the same age group. I expect that many of the parents are concerned about how quickly their children have absorbed Canadian culture, and are probably losing their traditional culture. And our geese will blot out the sun.

yeah, but at least Canada has no nutjobs that we know of...although they thought that about New Zealand. Bless those kids!
Chance as a real force is a myth. It has no basis in reality and no place in scientific inquiry. For science and philosophy to continue to advance in knowledge, chance must be demythologized once and for all. ~RC Sproul "A lie can travel half way around the world while the truth is putting on its shoes." ~Mark Twain " ~"If that's not sufficient for you go soak your head."~Faith You can "get answers" by watching the ducks. Subjectivism may very well undermine Christianity. In the same way that "allowing people to choose what they want to be when they grow up" undermines communism.~Stile

I would like to see a long term study that exams how religious and other attitudes change with age. I remember reading about a study and analysis (I think by Brookings Institute, but that is just a guess) that found that in the past teenagers of Southern evangelical groups would typically be rebelious, even rejecting their parents churches, but that once they matured and married and entered careers they returned to their parents churches and beliefs. This study then found that for a great many of those teenagers this was no longer the case. Because they are now typically going off to college, getting married and starting families later, and are moving away from their place of birth and families to find better jobs, they are remaining separated from their parents churches and beliefs, sometimes to the point of becoming agnostics or atheists.

That quote's a good (tentative) summary of my thoughts as well.
Thanks for that!

And of course your totally made up opinion is far more trustworthy than two thousand years of believers' views. One wonders how so many millions could have been persuaded to believe given that your opinion is certainly the most common.

But of course! It MUST be gullibility when so many disagree with the enlightened ones.

Faith writes: It MUST be gullibility when so many disagree with the enlightened ones. Nah.It's just gullibility because they accept the answer of God instead of continually searching for the answer and accepting whatever is discovered.

Amazing how the reports of people who have actually had the experience are always rejected in favor of totally made up stuff by atheists. Even stories about protracted periods in which no decision was made at all, in which the person did a lot of research and thinking about it. Really remarkable that. And by people who consider themselves to be rational and objective too. But only atheists are rational and objective, see how that works?

Faith writes: But only atheists are rational and objective, see how that works? I don't think only atheists are rational and objective. What else are you wrong about?

Would you like to provide an example we can discuss?
