RAmen
It's great to see this being reported on by a news group with such a wide circulation as the New York Times.
I think (and hope) this is just the tip of the iceberg for the coming out of atheist!
One thing I would like to see is more atheist participating in charity or more charitable organizations that are openly atheist. I think this would help greatly in changing the way atheist are viewed by the religious.

Would it surprise you to know that myself and my atheist friends donate considerable amounts of money to charity and do volunteer work? We just don't talk about it as much as christians do.
No, it doesn't surprise me at all.
I myself am very charitable and an atheist as well. But I think it's about time that we do talk about it, that we let it be know that atheist care about our fellow humans just as much as Christians do! And that we give to others without believing that we will be rewarded by god.
We do good for goodness's sake and not because we are kiss god's ass. Which is far better in my book!

I do not think atheist are any less charitable than religious people.
I don't either, I think atheist are just as charitable as religious people. That's why I like to see this brought to light in the public. How better to do this then by a charitable organization that is openly atheistic?

Hi ICANT,

We need lots of help trying to feed the hungry that come to the food shelters, also to keep the shelters for battered women open, the shelters for young teenage mothers, as well as the homeless.
My point wasn't that that atheist aren't doing enough, my point was that WE AREN'T TAKING THE CREDIT FOR OUR CHARITABLE ACTS!

She had expressed a desire to see Atheist more involved in doing good deeds, and taking the credit for it.
Excuse me? What I said was that I wanted to see it be public what atheist are 'already doing' for charity.
I think that atheist are very charitable. We just don't get the credit for it or we don't take the credit for it!
And to tell you the truth; when ever dealing with the public I'm always extremely cautious of people that claim "oh you can trust me, I'm a good person, I'm a Christian." I has been my experience in life that it's the good Christians that are the first to fuck you over.

For the record
It is I then, that must apologize.
Upon rereading my original post it appears as if I was not clear. But I did clarify myself later here Message 6 Message 9 and charified myself directly to you here Message 19
And for the record I think that dwise1 summed up my point very well (that I will admit did an awful job at myself) here: Message 21

Re: Re I am beginning
Hi ICANT,
ICANT writes:
A baby will learn very early in life to lie. He/she cries when wet, and hungry.
When that happens someone changes his diaper or feeds him/her.
He learns that when he/she cries someone will pick them up. So they begin to lie just to get you to pick them up.
They can be bawling their eye balls out, not a tear in sight, you pick them up and they hush immediately. He is not wet or hungry just wanting you to pick him/her up.
WOW! I hope you don't have children because you obviously don't know the first thing about meeting the needs of a child.
I hope that you do realize that infants need more that just feeding and diapering. They need love and affection just as much as being fed and having a dry diaper.
When they cry out to be held they aren't lying! They are crying to have their need for love met. They need to know that they're secure and that there is someone there for them.
They need this love and sense of security because they are human and humans are social animals.
What happens when we aren't good to others? What happens if we always act like self centered picks? No one likes to be around an asshole! Trust me!
So experience (NOT GOD) will show us that it's a good idea to be mindful of the needs of others (act morally) or no one is going to like you and damn sure, no one is going to love you. And being loved is a real human need, isn't it?
NO GOD REQUIRED!
