Sorry, I am not responding directly to CAL Thomas ( I think I may have heard this on the radio, but have not read through it to compelete remebrence but I wanted to point out that the newspaper report I read in 96 showed that the Catholic Church had accepted as "fact" Darwinlegit etc and Gould's Millienium Book made the distinctions of this kind of reporting but when I read the actual document I realized that the Pope in a sentence not dirctely about humans nicely showed the difference at work among biology, chemistry and physics and pointed out that any contained discontinuity could be possiblly running counter the actua human physico-chemistry and showed me that even relying on the intelligece of the day is no match to reading the original. i think Thomas was not not doubting but reporting.
