How do Christians deal with the violence in the Bible?

ok just as an over all question on this, wouldn't a person, or in this case a god making rules about what should or should not be done, follow his own rules to set an example?maybe i'm off but i would think that it would be far easier to show for example your children how to act, not to dictate how to act then do the things another away
shouldn't god act in a godly way, not like a spoiled child who doesn't get its wayi mean we could say god is a decadent bastard in the bible, lets all be bastards like that

lol i really should have posted earlier but oh well, are you agreeing with me or that i need to reread it?i have read it many times from the text genesis makes god out to be just like every other god the people in that time came up with ie: human faulty, failableI just always felt the OT shows too much crulity to equal the NT god
