The "just a theory" arguement
again.
I've lost count of the number of times that this has been explained, but here goes again.
In common parlance, a theory is a guess, and approximation. However, in science it has a much stronger meaning. A theory in science is an argument based on observed facts, that explains the facts, and makes predictions based on the observed facts and the conclusions of the thory. Further, in order to be accepted as a thory, all those predictions capable of being observed must be true. A theory is the best-established explanation of the facts available. Theories do not grow up and become facts. All theories in science are tentative in that the next fact to be discovered may cast doubt on or disprove them. However, neo-Darwinism is one of the best established theories in science, and is confirmed by multiple independent facts.
The word scientists use for an unconfirmed guess is hypothesis.
Bear this in mind.
An unconfirmed guess as solution is a hypothesis.
The best available scientific solution is a theory.
However, in one way evolution is a fact. There is no other credible interpretation of the available evidence than that, by some unspecified means, life on earth has evolved from a common ancestor. See
