Just wait. Successful marriages are built upon the hypocrisy of the husband.
Anyone so limited that they can only spell a word one way is severely handicapped!

We obviously need an atheist marketing machine to advise on such matters.
Like I said, it's all how you sell it. Sell baby. Sell!

Of course. You've never been married I guess. I have never been able to trust the smile on the preacher's face at a funeral. They always seem forced. I have also heard people change their assessment of someone at funerals. I don't know if this is hypocrisy. I think the stark light of mortality can have a profound impact.

When the wife shows you her latest dress it does flatter her and always looks good. Period.
When you have a child your child is the most wonderful child ever. Period. You will always love your child even when you want to wring their neck. Period. Life is often filled with hypocrisy of convenience or kindness. Anyone so limited that they can only spell a word one way is severely handicapped!

I'm not suggesting that you shouldn't be hypocritical. You should do whatever you're comfortable with, whatever you can live with, since you're the one who has to go on living. What would you have me do not to be hypocritical? Hypocrisy is just another of those facts of life, like anger and stupidlity, that we're all susceptible to from time to time. There's no need to avoid it like the plague. Sometimes it may be appropriate. Life is like a Hot Wheels car. Sometimes it goes behind the couch and you can't find it.

1) The cause of death was suicide by hanging. He was scheduled for release next month. In light of this and the aforementioned life he led, the pastor and all attending still spoke of him in heaven and "being called on by god". Is this not hypocritical? Or is it ok to be a complete scumbag and kill yourself and still be all good in the eyes of your god? this is actually a difficult question to answer, for there are many answers. the pastor could just be saying those words to make the family feel better or he is saying those words to reinforce hope in those attending. or still, we donot know if the person repented of his sins and just could not take life outside of prison anymore? then you have to factor in God's grace and how He acted inthat boy's life. unfortuantely, no one will really know till they get to heaven what God did for that boy. those words have nothing to do with looking good in God's eyes' they seem strictly to come from the pastor and he does NOT have th efinal word on who gets to heaven. of course it would help to know if this was a christian protestant funeral, a protestant one or a R. catholic one. a lot of information is missing in the OP.
2) Is it appropriate to use a service for a deceased person as your (the pastor) pulpit and to preach about your own supposed salvation? Is this a christian tradition? bible college students and seminarians are taught that funerals are for the living, so yes it would be appropriate to use the serice as a pulpit. i do not neccessarily agree withthat idea as the message of the gospel can be given in so many different ways than holding participants hostage as they mourn a dead person.

quote:I noticed this trend at a few funerals I've been to. It seemed to be at the services for the people who were not church goers or considered Christians. The one I went to where the man was an uber Christian, the preacher didn't preach on salvation. I was very disappointed at the ones where they preached. One preacher talked more about himself than the deceased. The audience was audibly groaning. Since the men didn't go to the preachers' churches, the preachers didn't really know them. Maybe the preaching is all they have if they don't know the person well enough. Both of the deceased men were good men. They just weren't church goers. IMO, the funeral is to remember the deceased not preach a warning to possible nonbelievers.

Maybe the preaching is all they have if they don't know the person well enough. That's just it: in this case, the pastor WAS a good friend (allegedly) of the deceased. He claimed the deceased was his disciple (something he was extremely proud of).
IMO, the funeral is to remember the deceased not preach a warning to possible nonbelievers. Yep. That's what he did as well. The end of his sermon was "this should serve as a good time for you to find the lord jesus and let him into your life". Your god believes in Unicorns
