I see your points and mostly agree. I find this interesting. Is there not any global standard of 'rightness'? No single point that could be considered right for all people. Like basic human rights. The right to life? Is there no baseline of acceptable behaviour for both people and states?

If I walk down the street brandishing a big sharp knife but doing no harm I will most likely be attacked by the authorities. Perhaps rightfully so. I don't consider myself to be a war-monger. OK so we have evolved some standards. If there are some hold outs against those standards should we not seek to include them? If the Iranians want to hang their gays because they are gay should we not try to change that behaviour or do we have no business there? If we actually believe that all people have a right to life should we not work to make that a reality?

No, I didn't say that. But in most cases it is ineffective in the long run.The problem is that unless you end up getting consensus from the individual citizens of a Nation to abide by the given set of standards, those standards can only be maintained by continued coercion. You must occupy the Nation for an extended period and even then have no assurance of that Nation continuing to abide by the standards once the coercion is stopped.As long as we operate within in a Nation State paradigm we need to recognize that every Nation State has the right to self rule. If a Nation State tries to impose its culture on another Nation State, then we should oppose and sanction that Nation State.That does not leave a Nation State helpless. If for example we disagree with Iran's internal policies on Gays we can offer sanctuary to all such people, we can refuse to do business with Iran, we can try to persuade other Nation States to boycott Iran, we can speak out publicly in opposition to their policies.
