Can't say it is a surprise.
But we need to remember that the US has survived many such periods. And that there are still lots of US owned lands to create new reservations.

Re: My reactions.
I posted this on my facebook:
Update Your Browser | Facebook
quote:
One of the campaign slogans in this last election was Make America Great Again. In light of this, as we pause before the God Who created us and ponder our collective destiny...what does this slogan really mean? More to the point: What should it mean?
First, I will say what it does not mean...at least to me.It does not mean economic growth and materialist expansion. The Creator of all seen and unseen is unimpressed with how wealthy we become. God could care less if every family has a new i-phone or if we are able to take home more money or if we are able to build skyscrapers and space ships. God is concerned with one thing. How will we treat each other? How will we embrace peace in the world? Will we continue to spend more money on newer and more terrible military weapons? Will we build walls instead of bridges? Will we feed the poor or will we cut off government assistance? Will we help our community or will we retreat into our paneled houses and care only for our own families and children while ignoring the growing poverty outside our homes, cities, and our nation?
I did not vote for Donald Trump. I am ashamed of my country for being so ignorant regarding reality. I pray that this egotistical man humbles himself and trusts God to help him govern an aging, desperate, and overly entitled empire. He is for better or worse the figurehead for my nation. When everyone in the rest of the world looks to America, they will see and hear this man speak. They will be affected by foreign policy decisions. And lets not pretend that America is a Christian nation. We are a pluralistic society that grants freedoms to all causes and beliefs...whether God approves of them or not. America DOES have Christians, though. We also have people of other faiths as well as people who believe only in science and human potential.
The way to make America great again is for the people to embrace other people and work together to make humanity great again. For my Christian friends, Christ in us can make this happen. For my Islamic friends, Jesus not only was a great prophet--He is a great prophet even today and will help teach you to communicate with God as you allow God to strengthen you. For my atheist friends, human potential is only actualized through something greater within us than ourselves. You all know what I believe. Show me what you believe by what you do.
Finally I will leave you with a scripture:
Eph 6:12-- For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.
Got Jesus?

Chance as a real force is a myth. It has no basis in reality and no place in scientific inquiry. For science and philosophy to continue to advance in knowledge, chance must be demythologized once and for all. —RC Sproul

Re: The Clinton Machine
Well, let's see if I got the steps of your mature counter-argument correct:
No, you haven't.
Your argument, basically, is:
X caused Y.
Y is bad (perhaps even evil).
Therefore X is evil.
But the evidence that you present is all about Y being bad. You have not provided one scintilla of evidence that X caused Y.
Yes, we get it that you have an irrational hatred of Clinton. But don't pretend that your anger is an argument. It isn't.

Re: Can't say it is a surprise.
I don't think the Kochs or Big Business will initially be happy with this outcome. Nor would President Trump seem to be the kind of person who would take kindly outside folk trying to occupy his property.
But...
the Republican Party has an opportunity to place themselves as the Party in Control for generations if:
they institute a single payer health care system
they rape the Federal Lands to provide funding for Social Security
they legalize and federalize currently illegal recreational drug
they provide circus

Sad Day
Taken together, most of my friends and the people closest to me are undocumented immigrants, LGBTQ, and people of color. So it's a particularly despondent day here.
Trump's ascendancy to the presidency and the Republican control of -- well, just about everything in D.C. -- means day-to-day liberties enjoyed under the Obama administration are now wholly threatened. If you're a PoC, LGBTQ, undocumented, Muslim, or a woman, last night's negative consequences are real -- and severe. The alt-right is now much more emboldened, so it makes it a scary time to actually walk the streets of a country where we're supposed to feel some level of safety.
Blegh.

Re: The Clinton Failure
That is not because of Bernie or third party supporters, it is because, like Gore, she failed to draw voters to the polls: more people did not vote than voted for third parties, AGAIN. Lesson not learned.
I have to echo RAZD here. I mentioned this in an earlier post, but I still believe that Hillary not choosing Bernie as her VP pick was a huge mistake. She decided to try to think tactically (i.e. Virginia) rather than thinking pragmatically. In the same way Trump energized his constituency, Bernie had the same effect. But instead, she gave us Tim Kaine, a guy who looks like he just farted and is smirking at the odor he has produced.
But the big takeaway here is the Democratic party grossly underestimating how disenfranchised people in the rust belt have been feeling for a long time now. They watched their net worth evaporate as jobs were shipped overseas. And to add insult to injury, many got devastated in the wake of the financial crisis.
The Democrats were supposed to be the party of the middle class. But in the end, they just became a reflection of the Republicans by placating to the same Wall Street assholes that have caused the last few booms and busts we have seen.
One little sidebar: if I was an incumbent politician in Germany or France, I would be shitting my pants right now. Between our election and Brexit, there is now a ground swell of populism sweeping through the world. Merkel is not doing well in Germany and the far right party in France is gaining ground. The results of Brexit and our election could be just the catalyst they need to sweep into victory.
Marine Le Pen has already started to use this outcome to bolster her chances. Now everyone will say there is 'no chance' of her winning. Well, we said that about Brexit. We said that about Trump. Is anything not possible at this stage?

Thanks RAZD.
It greatly helps me to know that there are SOME Americans who think intelligently, morally and empathetically.
There's surely gonna be some dark days ahead in Trump's presidency where I'll need a steadying voice. To me, you are kinda like the forum's answer to yesterday's Jimmy Stewart or today's Tom Hanks (reference to SNL). Please keep posting.
Thanks,
Drone

The title of the photo is "drone-strike-by-obama-children-killed.jpg"
There were no drones in 1982.
However, if you are absolutely 100% sure, let me know. I think I can find a more suitable photo for you from the MILLION Iraqi deaths caused by Hillary.

Then why did those same people vote for a guy who sent jobs overseas? That's what many of us are shaking our heads at.

Well we now have a Republican president and congress.
I hope they can figure out how to govern because the ball in now in their court.
Obviously the Democratic pundits miscalculated how pissed off the average white blue collar American worker is the seemed to have made it to the voting booth in record numbers.
They would of elected a monkey other than any established politician I think.
