Given what Dr A said, your comment was unremarkable. The suspension seems a bit random to me. No matter, treat it as a badge of honour, by-and-large moderation here is pretty low key and generally fair.

Well that explains which one of us was throwing out insults. I wouldn't regard it as an insult, if I were you. Moose was merely exorting you to not stoop down to the level of your opponents and instead to exhibit your smartness. It's a bit like saying 'act your age not your shoe size' for a different context. It's a comment on temporal juvenile behaviour (usually) rather than an assessment on your overall personality. I can't speak for Moose's mind but I expect it was partly to avoid the thread collapsing into a series of personal snipes which it apparently was in the midst of at the time. Partly as a means of general discipline, to help you focus on the subjects rather than winning wars of snide with. I'm not justifying Moose's specific action, but as you are new I'd thought some insight into moderator thought might help understand what might have seemed entirely arbitrary rather than merely partially arbitrary Normally suspensions follow warnings, and this time seems no exception: Message 161: "remain focused on the topic."
I'll be interested to learn why Message 160 is flagged as edited by the admin. Moose appears to have edited the message purely to add the message that you were suspended for the message, presumably for transparency and warning's sake. Personally I'd prefer an actual posted message as to why someone was suspended, only editing a post to hide material that contravenes the rules, including a message that some text was hidden. I hope that helps provide additional illumination. As someone else indicated, you kind of won an EvC lottery of sorts with this one. Glad to see you taking it with dignity

Well, this confuses me even more as you make it sound like a warning was given and I ignored it. The problem with that scenario is that the warning came in message #161 (Percy), while the post I was suspended for (by Moose) was message #160. Notice those numbers. My post was up before the warning was issued. Your "this time seems no exception" makes it sound as though it's normal to issue warnings and then retroactively go BACKWARDS from the warning and issue suspensions. While technically that would temporally qualify as "suspension follow warning", I hardly think that is the traditional definition of the word "warning". Again, y'all can do what you like, but especially considering other's comments that were not considered out of line by Percy in the thread, that suspension without any warning before the post was written is pretty much the geek definition of random (or arbitrary). Respectfully JB Edited by ThinAirDesigns, : No reason given.

I do want to echo what Tangle says above about the moderation generally being fair here.
I've been on forums of all sorts for decades now and been moderator more than once. Tough job. ThanksJB

Marc9000 pops in every now and then to toss a couple grenades. In response I posted my Message 161 as just a general reminder to remain focused on the topic (in other words, to ignore him), but only after a couple replies to Marc had been posted, including yours. Again, I can't know what issue Adminnemooseus took with your message. He tends to work the night shift, he'll probably be on-line later.

No worries Percy, I really don't want to blow this up though I am interested in the thought process that created it. But know that I recognize that I'm not entitled even to know that as I'm simply a guest.
I'll let moose speak his mind and let it go. Thanks to all. JB

Yeah, the short of it is that I mistook message 152 and 161 due to having numerous tabs open.
No need to thank me for attempting to assist you quite so vociferously though - I get showered with enough thanks at my job as it is and always appreciate more. Alternatively, you might consider how you are presenting your views, because you really managed to come off as condescending, sarcastic, faux-innocent and potentially other fun stuff in a relatively short space of time. I expect the way you communicate, intended or otherwise, may need some self-moderation to avoid other seemingly arbitrary acts of moderation. I hope this also helps.

The temporary suspension feature is something I'm not familiar with on any other forum.
It's a pretty nice compromise between issuing endless warnings and implementing a permanent ban. Twenty-four hours is pretty mild. Many have been suspended for less.Love your enemies! |

Yikes. A tad innapropriate from an independent, neutral referee.

I don't like to criticize moderation in public. This may be my first time doing so here.
From Message 435 I'm asking all participants to avoid references to Biblical topics in this thread, or in any science thread. I understand what you are getting at, but isn't such a rule going to crush discussion in several of the forums? It is important to be able to cite the Bible in the Accuracy and Inerrancy forum of course. But also we need freedom to do that in the Geology and the Great Flood forum, and the Origin of Life forum. In at least those forums, the relevancy of what is discussed in the Bible is obvious, but I'm hard pressed to think of any of the science forum where a citation of the Bible would not be relevant. If you look at the descriptions below each forum title, most of the science forums talk about a debate between Biblical and scientific versions of the truth. I'd recommend either limiting your rule to a single thread, or using a more complicated rule about when Bible references are allowed. But your current rule seems to be born out of frustration, and it is surely not meant to be followed literally.Je Suis Charlie Under a government which imprisons any unjustly, the true place for a just man is also in prison. Thoreau: Civil Disobedience (1846) If there is no struggle, there is no progress. Those who profess to favor freedom, and deprecate agitation, are men who want crops without plowing up the ground, they want rain without thunder and lightning. Frederick Douglass The only thing I suggest is that genes died as a result of all those people and animals dying in the Flood, whose traits were lost to the species and therefore the alleles for those traits, so the genes just died and remain in the genome as corpses.
