Re: Evangelical Pastor Boyd disowns religious political activism
Well, good for him. Turning the pulpit into a political tool is not what it is all about.
That doesn't mean in a participatory republic that we should be silent however, but keeping the ministry out of a politial spirit is necessary.

Re: inconsistency and false gospel?
Actually, I just commended this guy before reading these comments. I find them to be suspect. I don't know about what he means by "evangelicals" but certainly a great many Bible-beleivers have always oppossed abortion. I don't think most Pentecostals and conservative Baptists ever favored it, and so I find his criticism odd.
I mean it's fine to say that throwing off meekness for trying to be right all the time is a real problem, but I don't get the abortion comments at all.

Re: inconsistency and false gospel?
we decided it must be because the hicks are too stupid to see any differences while racists are smart enough to see differences but not smart enough to know that that doesn't make black people not people.
What do you mean by "differences"? Surely you do not mean that people cannot see the cultural differences between white and black Americans.

Re: inconsistency and false gospel?
i always knew that the church originally supported the legalization.
What church?
The Catholic church?
How about the Holiness churches?
Apostolic churches?
the SBC?
the Assemblies of God?
the Mennonites?
the Quakers?
the Mormons? do they count?
the Moravians?
Pentecostal Holiness?
Free Will Baptists?
the Reformed denominations?
the Charismatics?
all the independent Pentecostals?
how about Charismatic Episcopalians?
the various Lutherans?
the different Presbyterians?
the Orthodox churches?
Methodists?
etc, etc,.....

Re: inconsistency and false gospel?
the truth is that abortion was legalized in order to regulate it because before it was legalized, women were being murdered by the thousands by doctors who provided a necessary service with bad procedures and dirty instruments.
Bogus. The truth is more women die today from botched legal abortions per year than ever did from illegal abortions (one reason is there are so many more abortions).

Re: inconsistency and false gospel?
brenna, so you can't answer?
The truth is the civil righs movement was led by ministers of the gospel, and so the church as far as the churches of those ministers, did indeed lead the way there.
I think part of the problem is your assuming such a thing as a monolithic entity called the church exists organizationally.

Re: inconsistency and false gospel?
So was Martin Luther King, jr a Christian minister or not? How about the rest of the ordained ministers active in the civil rights movement? Are they not part of the church?
Exactly what is your idea of the church?

Re: inconsistency and false gospel?
but there is such a political entity as the 'evangelical movement' or 'christian voters' or what have you. these are what i am referring to.
So white people are part of "the church" and blacks are not?
Moreover, on what basis do you have to make the claim that conservative, white Christian voters were pro-abortion when it became legal?

Re: inconsistency and false gospel?
You referred to "the church". Do you mean to qualify that and claim the white church?
If so, can you substantiate that the white church was pro-abortion?

Re: inconsistency and false gospel?
Yea well, I am not as old as your Mom and I can remember the hoopla against Roe vs Wade in the 70s by the religious right. Moreover, the 100K per year with thousands dying was a calculated lie. The guy that produced those numbers later recanted and stated he lied to push for legalization.
