It's funny how at least people from the northern U.S. and most of Canada say that the two countries aren't that different. Canada has a very diverse cultural landscape, even just going western to eastern Canada, so I can't speak for the whole country. But where I am, (middle of the wonderfully flat and currently snowing prairies ) mention that your a Christian (or sometimes even that you just believe in God)and be in for some interesting looks...
Last Federal election, the leader of the opposition was blasted for a few reasons. Being a young earth creationist was one of them, but the main reason was that he did not campaign on sundays. It was not a good time for Canadian politics which usually doesn't get that bad with the bashing. Anyways, here's a link to one of the articles about it

We've got another election coming up, probably next fall, so we'll see what happens then.
