"Declaring victory" will certainly get a response out of Terry - no substantive data or argument, but a response. The evil of evolutionism must never be allowed to win.

Ah you had better watch it Moose. I see that salty now finds you "tiresome" - surely the end is nigh.

BTW: can't you just imagine salty sitting in the corner of a pub somewhere, a lonely disappointed man, muttering into his beer about "Darwinists" and how they would never listen to him? That's the picture that always comes to my mind, anyway.

Isn't Terry violating his own rules when he says in Message 46 of the More Rapid Canyon Carving thread:

At this point, moose, it is obvious that you will accept no evidence, no reference, other than what you already choose to believe.

He is, as he says in Message 10 of the Morton's Demon thread, offering only his opinion of your thought processes, making it, in Terry's own words, "uncivil and not the kind of post we want here."

A good rule of thumb for a moderator to follow is to never moderate discussions in which one is taking part. The temptation to use your moderator powers to your own advantage is too great. You might mention this to Terry.

Keep hanging in there, DQ!

Terry and Salty are having a disagreement right now, in the anthropology "Closer and Closer" topic.

This is part of Terry's message 19:

quote:
Of course, neither you nor I have to agree with the DATES given by accepting such evidences at face value, but we certainly should not discount the evidence itself simply because it does not fit our preconceived notions of where man should and should not be found in the geologic record.

He is referring to the "preconceived notions" of mainstream science.

A ps to the big Admin guy: I've discovered that one must not put the "http colon slash slash" into the UBB code for links such as the above. The UBB code provides the "http colon slash slash" itself. If the poster also supplies it, it gets there twice, and the link is bad. I'm surprised that I've (Admin mode) only encountered, and fixed this problem once. I don't think the UBB code help page is clear on this situation. Perhaps it needs a bit more detail?

Isn't Salty's comment about you becoming tiresome a violation of Terry's civility standards? Terry wouldn't unequally enforce his standards, would he?

Terry enforces his standards on creationists equally and on evolutionists equally. It's just that he holds the groups to different standards.

Yes, I noticed the divergence of view between Salty and Terry. The strain of a marriage made in heaven must be showing.

First a further comment about Terry's "preconceived notions" comment, that was aimed at mainstream science. He seems to do such a lot. I found it highly ironic, coming from one having a "preconceived notion" of the magnitude of being a "young earther". The quote wasn't intended as any comment on the Terry/Salty relationship.

I'm not sure, but it seems that Salty is an "old earther"?

As for Salty's "tiresome" comment - I think, to a degree, I may have had it coming. I had very badly stated a question (including using some wrong numbers), that ended up coming out as being of a "Have you quit beating your wife?" nature. It took two follow up messages from Terry, for me to realize my error, for which I subsequently apologized.

Terry's way of operating in both the "young earth" and "old earth" mode sure does tend to get one fouled up.

Moose, Salty certainly is an old earther. He might best be described as a theistic, saltationist evolutionist. He (John A. Davison) is/was an associate professor of biology at University of Vermont. More at his web page. The only characteristic position which he shares with Terry is anti-Darwinianism. However Salty accepts the remainder of conventional science; he just rejects natural selection as the mechanism for evolution. Necessity makes strange bedfellows.

Terry is full of ironies. However his preconceived notion of a young earth is not one as such, he has interpreted it from his reading of the bible and therefore it is a conclusion based on authority against which mere evidence must be judged and likely found wanting.

Twice before I have tried to respond without password. No deal. Let's see if it works this time.

I took Terry to task regarding his biblical scholarship in the Pangea affair. In short, it appears that his interpretation of scripture is even more fantastic than his science.

Quoting myself:
quote:
Terry seems unable to concede that he has made any sort of a mistake.

Scavenger hunt time. Can anyone find a example, at the Talk Origins board, of Terry owning up to having made an erroneous statement, a bad conclusion, etc. etc. etc. Has he ever admitted to being wrong?
