Author | Topic: Why read the Bible literally? | |||||||||||||||||||||||

I would like to expand on the beliefs of C.S. Lewis. My signature is taken from Lewis, his Narnia series. In the final book he addresses a subject that seems to come up quite often here, "Who can be saved". In it he clearly says that profession of belief is NOT the determining factor and that even Non-Believers, even folk actively working for some other God, will be saved.

Final book, The Last Battle. Near the end of the book.

Love to but I gave my most recent set to a youngster. Hell yes it counts as a theological work. Does Genesis count as a theological work? LOL

Thanks for posting that. I go through about four or five sets every year. Everytime I find a kid that hasn't read the series yet I give them a set. 'bout time I bought yet another one.
The Narnia series can do more to set a child on the path to really meeting GOD than any book I know of, including the Bible. If there was ever a body of inspired writing, the Narnia Series must be a prime example. Later, as they grow older, I try to steer them towards the other books and lectures. Aslan is not a Tame Lion

We are getting down to the end of this thread, but before it is closed I'd like to take a moment to address the question of how the jews regarded the Sabbath laws.
This is important and IMHO relevant to this thread because it demonstrates that neither the Pharisees (who were strict interpretationists) or Jesus ever interpreted the Bible (Torah and Tanaka) literally. The subject of what work entailed was an ongoing discussion with as many variations, limitations, exclusions, interpretations and analogies as one could possibly imagine. There was NO literal point of view. Aslan is not a Tame Lion

So you believe it is right to teach children things that are false?

It's not what I define as false, it's what IS false. 2 + 2 does not equal 5.

Evolution IS 2 + 2 = 4.
EVOLUTION IS NOT 2+2=4 but even if it were, those who think it's not have the right to believe that and be left alone to believe it and not be harassed by self-appointed dictators like you enforced by the state. You are welcome to believe any thing YOU want. But can you justify teaching children falshoods? Aslan is not a Tame Lion

Belief is fine about non-factual things. But 2 + 2 = 4. It doesn't matter what you believe, 2 + 2 = 4. That's not opinion, that's a fact.
The Earth is billions of years old. That's not belief, that's a fact. Anyone who says otherwise is simply wrong. The universe is tens of billions yeaars old at a minimum. That's not belief, that's a fact. Anyone who says otherwise is simply wrong. Evolution happened, man is a product of that evolution. That's not belief, that's a fact. Anyone who says otherwise is simply wrong. It is not me telling you what to believe, it is the only possible conclusion from the evidence. To believe otherwise is simply wrong. Let people be wrong. I do. They are.
You have no right to force them to be right. I don't and can't force them to be right. The facts though make them wrong.
You are simply giving the same rationale that every do-gooder dictator has done who ended up imprisoning and murdering people to make them agree with the Factual Truth. What an absurd statement. You are free to believe anything you want. You can believe the earth is 6000 years old. You're wrong. You can believe there was a Biblical flood. You're wrong. You can believe there was a Biblical Garden of Eden and Adam and Steve. You're wrong. You can believe that the Exodus happened as described in the Bible. You're wrong. You can believe that only Christians can be saved. You're wrong. The question is, "How can you in good conscience teach such falsehoods to children?" Aslan is not a Tame Lion
