The problem I'm having with this issue is that the theme of much heterosexual pornography is the degradation of women, which I think very unhealthy, and I wouldn't mind if there was less of it.

I guess what bothers me is a notion I have that some of this participation by women in this stuff may not be all that "voluntary."
I read this book by Linda Lovelace one time.

Re: As a key adovocado of censorship...
I understand your concerns about erosion of free speech. It's just that I think the hardcore, heterosexual "porn industry" is a dirty business, run by a bunch of pimps who enslave women to do this stuff.
I don't know this for a fact, of course; but I suspect it.
And if they can keep making money at it, they'll keep doing it.
So I'm concerned not just about the message but about the messenger.

Re: As a key adovocado of censorship...
First of all that is not a fact. It may have been true back when it was illegal, or as it was coming out of illegality and still cost some amount of money to make.
I read this book by Linda Lovelace (porn queen, 60s) who said she was forced to do it because she had a gun pointed at her. Her report sounded authentic to me. Her movie went mainstream.

Re: As a key adovocado of censorship...
if you want to close down businesses that have (real honest-to-god) slaves you need to start with the cleaners, resturants, clothing industry etc.
They have guns pointed at them? Work in this restaurant or I will kill you?

Re: As a key adovocado of censorship...
A gun pointed at her by her husband. Linda Lovelace was abused, that is true, but she was abused by her husband not by the porn industry.
She was also forced to marry this pimp.

What do you think Illegals do otherwise?
You are referring to a totally different problem.

Re: A different thought
One thing Americans seem to do is jump to blame the industry
This is a special case, and I will tell you why it is a special case. The main theme of hardcore heterosexual porn is "I am a woman. I want to be degraded." There is a link between that idea and the possibility of real enslavement. Most people do not want to be degraded, but they can be forced to act as though they do.

Re: A different thought
In other words humans like to see degradation and there are people willing to be degraded for money, or free! It is very popular in general. I am uncertain why stuff with sexual content changes it into a "special case".
It's a special case because degradation is the main theme. In the mainstream movie genre, there are many themes.
I don't see what Christianity has got to do with this issue.

4) robinrohan is the only one, so far, to bring up a point that is even remotely related to the issue of these laws: namely, the possible use of women in pornography against their will. Is this a widespread problem? If so, how will these record-keeping laws help resolve this problem?
If it is not against their will, if they are not being forced either overtly or subtly, I have no problem with pornography from a legal standpoint (morally is another matter).
But I have suspicions.

Re: A different thought
Given the problem you've presented do you think this bill is a solution? Is there a solution you advocate?
lfen
Regulate it openly. Make sure the porn is not controlled by pimps.

Re: A different thought
It should be just like the workplace anywhere, with recourse to the law if one is sexually or otherwise harassed.

Re: A different thought
I am not going get into details of porn movies. To me it's obvious.
There is a reason, maybe, wny most women don't like porn. They recognize it instantly as degrading to them. But then I'm not a woman and so am not sure what they think.

Re: A different thought
"Theme" is a subjective attribute that can be found in just about any instance of symbolic communication and exists solely in the perceptions of the viewer.
I'm not talking about subtle, symbolic themes: I am talking about what's obvious.

Re: A different thought
2) There are many different "genres" within porn. You say main theme, as if that is all porn, but then I ask you to show me what gives you any ability to say that? There are numerous indpendents and corps dedicated to themes that are quite the opposite of degradation. Most notable are women owned and run businesses that celebrate women being with women.
I mean only hardcore heterosexual porn, as I pointed out earilier. I know nothing about any other.
