It's a honor for me that you even bothered to read it. But I think your description is mistaken. The character comes off as someone who is excessively worried about her looks--that was the point. Yeah, I'm not sure what that's all about. I think it has to do with a common temperament in regards to "wit." We sort of find the same things funny, or something of that sort. And of course there are people who have no "wit" (ironic temperament) at all. And we have to put up with their sorry asses.
