We'll just toss them into the old KFC bucket and call it a day. Better make that a bucket of wings, so people don't expect much meat. Those who would sacrifice an essential liberty for a temporary security will lose both, and deserve neither. -- Benjamin Franklin

I can't help but feel this is not the answer jar wants to give, but the answer he feels he should give. Of course it is the answer I want to give. It is the only honest answer. As for someone saying they know GOD exists, they are simply lying to themselves successfully, and that is very sad. Aslan is not a Tame Lion

Your knowledge is clearly made of more fragile stuff. It doesn't say much for a person's confidence when they will not allow a question they ask of others to be entertained by themselves even hypothetically. People who know they stand on solid ground behave differently. They don't shrink from sticking their toes in the kiddie pool for fear that they'll drown. If they feel like sticking their toes in the water and swishing them around a bit, they do. They can. You really have no grasp at all of the situation of a believer. God is an absolute certainty, a present experienced reality at times. There is no fooling around with hypotheticals about what if He didn't exist or didn't this or didn't that. The question hits one as a bizarre impossibility. It is an exercise in futility, a waste of time. There is nothing whatever to be gained by it, except entertaining the unbelievers, and sometimes we'll indulge in that, as I did when I answered the question about Allah, and I answered truthfully. But it's really just a mind game to no purpose. Allah does not exist and this is the number one truth to be stated, which is what Iano did. There is no shakiness of faith here whatever, quite the opposite. It's more like a feeling of amazed incredulity that anyone would pose such a hypothetical, something so illogical and irrational it is at first hard to get into the gameplaying mindset. A being that does not exist cannot send me anywhere.
Kings were put to death long before 21 January 1793. But regicides of earlier times and their followers were interested in attacking the person, not the principle, of the king. They wanted another king, and that was all. It never occurred to them that the throne could remain empty forever. -- Albert Camus

True. But that wasn't the question.

By your own terms it is an entirely acceptable answer to the question.

I said Allah cannot exist. The reason is that God does and he ain't Allah (and I only need to be convinced of that to be rendered unable to answer the question in the manner many desire)
How does an agnostic or an athiest arrive at does not/cannot exist

There is no fooling around with hypotheticals about what if He didn't exist or didn't this or didn't that. I don't know about anyone else, but I find this statement terrifying. As soon as you move from asking questions and considering the implications you enter the realm of brainwashed cultists. It's beliefs like this that cause people to commit genocides, mass suicides and self stay members of destructive cults like Scientology. I blows my mind that any intelligent, caring person can believe something like this and it scares the heck out of me that this is actually what fundies think like. All it takes is a very persuasive charimatic individual to move you from this unconditional belief to do whatever they want of you. Just look at what Manson did. Hitler. Osama. As soon as you close yourself to questioning your beliefs this is the realm you enter. I can see it now - biblical archeaologists uncover the verified gospel of Jesus and he actually speaks about how all non believers must be given the chance to repent and convert or be slain. If the church says it is valid and true they would immediately have this massive army of zombies to perform their dirty deeds. Questioning is NOT allowed. God says it it so and God is unconditionally correct. I wonder how long before the next Christian Osama makes an appearance.

As soon as you close yourself to questioning your beliefs this is the realm you enter. This is simple perpetual-journey-never-a-destination speak. As it happens, arriving at a destination means you can get off and check out the surroundings. There is plenty to be questioned. Just not the destination. Hope that makes you sleep easier.

quote: I can't speak for all agnostics or atheists, but the following does it for me. All phenomena that I am aware of have explanations that do not involve the existence of a god. The written scriptures that claim that existence of a god are self-contradictory and/or contain events that are contradicted by plain facts in the real world. The claims of individuals of a "personal experience" of some sort of deity or another are little different from other psychological phenomena that are known to be unreliable. The tenets of most revealed religions defy common sense. Kings were put to death long before 21 January 1793. But regicides of earlier times and their followers were interested in attacking the person, not the principle, of the king. They wanted another king, and that was all. There is plenty to be questioned. Just not the destination. Your "destination" is strictly one of your own choosing. The real destination - the "end of the line" - is one that you will not see if you get off prematurely. The question you need to ask yourself is, "Is this the destination, or do I need to stay on the train?" Help scientific research in your spare time. No cost. No obligation. Not even Richard Dawkins goes so far as to exclude the possibility of Gods existance. It is saying something that you do appear to do so - especially on the basis of something like this.
All phenomena that I am aware of have explanations that do not involve the existence of a god. And the phenomena you are not aware of? Either there are none or there are but you are not aware of them. And the phenomena which you are aware of for which there is no explanation? Cannot exist? Or pretty damn convinced he does not exist? If the latter, then the OP is for you

The question you need to ask yourself is, "Is this the destination, or do I need to stay on the train?" I stayed on until He booted me off. There wasn't much opportunity to question IIRC.

Don't waste your efforts complaining about what you didn't question in the past. The time to be questioning is now. And the questions to be asking include, "Why did He kick poor iano off the train when so many others are still on it?" and "What is poor iano missing while he's stuck in the station?"
