Re: May as well just go home
We have 10 in our league, and I get to pick 10th.
Now, we have a serpentine draft, which means I get to pick 10th and 11th, so I assume I'll pick the "best" running back left, but should I go for two RBs right away, or jump to the best QB or WR to shake things up, considering after the 2 rounds I'll have to wait to pick again, I'll be too far down the order to get a good one...tactics tactics.

Re: My take on American Football
To be clear...Offensive holding, illegal use of hands arms or body is a 10 yard penalty. Defensive holding (which is a penalty) is a 5 yard penalty.
So true, yes. Thank you.

Re: My take on American Football
Is there anywhere on the web that I can see highlights or whatever of decent games? For free!!
I have been inspired enough to have a look at something other than the superbowl which has been my only exposure really to date.

Draft Strategy

The biggest thing to consider is how your league scores points.
Do you get PPR (Points Per Reception?) that really increases the value of WRs. Also, our league has a bunch of bonuses for WRs... like +3 for a 100 yard game, and +1 for any 40 yard (or longer) reception... that sort of thing. Such things make WRs more valuable in my league. But you'll have to be the judge of the scoring system in your own league.
The second thing to remember is that you're half drafting for "best players" and also drafting for "best value." Like... maybe most of the RBs will be gone by the time you get your first pick. Which means not many more are going to be gone by the time it gets around to you again. And, (after the top 3 or 4) most of the top 10-15 QBs really aren't all that different... so you may even want to consider taking the top 2 WRs (Fitzgerald and Andre Johnson) and settle for medium QB/RB (which you may likely be getting anyway, and aren't too different from the options available to you if you took them earlier).
Drafting for value is most easily shown by looking at Kickers. Look at the top placed kicker from last season, and look at the next top 20. They hardly differ by any significant amount of points across the whole season. What does this tell us? Do not, ever, pick a kicker until it's last or at least second-last round. Even if you get last-choice of kickers... it doesn't really matter, they all get pretty much the same level of points. Use those higher draft picks on something useful... take a chance on an iffy WR, fill a missing void... whatever's more valuable at the moment.
Try to apply the "drafting for value" idea for all your picks throughout the whole draft. Look at the value of the players that are left. If you can get a top WR, or a middle-of-the pack RB. And there's lots of middle-of-the pack RBs still available... wait on the RB, nab that WR.
Are you a "TD Heavy" league? (6 points for QB TD?) Or normal? (4 points for QB TD?) My league is TD Heavy... which bumps QBs up a bit in their value. But generally, QBs don't need to start being taken 'till 3rd or even 4th round. Of course, if "everyone" starts taking one anyway... you don't want to be left in the cold.
So much to consider... so much to decide "on the fly." Drafts are really fun

In the end, it's gambling. All the predictions in the world aren't going to say exactly what any player's going to do as opposed to any other. Especially when injuries occur. The fun's in trying to guess at that guy who's going to be awesome that no one else sees coming!

Re: Draft Strategy
Most of our points are based off of yards gained per game, whether receiving or running, which makes RBs the point powerhouses, as they can run and receive, especially if you pick one from a run heavy offense.
As for touchdowns, it's 6 points across the board, passing, receiving and/or rushing. If you can guarantee a good passer/receiver combo, you can double up on TD points by having both the passer and receiver of a touchdown playing on your team, but that can backfire if the QB has a bad day...
As for drafting for value, I agree 100%, but deciding whether a mid tier RB is better than a low top tier WR is a very tough calculation to make. I've got my strategy this year pretty well in hand, but I'm definitely open to finding new resources that can help shape it.
Sleepers or rookies are often the deciding factor. I picked Matt Forte in a late round last year, and after the first week, he was one of my starting RBs, but it was almost all luck. I didn't think he'd do all that well, he was just listed at the top of the remaining RBs and I was looking for a backup.

Re: My take on American Football
It'll be tough to find the games for free, as the NFL has a pretty strong group of lawyers who go after unlicensed broadcasts, but you can find highlights in many places, including NFL.com | Official Site of the National Football League, ESPN: Serving sports fans. Anytime. Anywhere., or even FOX Sports News, Scores, Schedules, Odds, Shows, Streams & Videos | FOX Sports or CBS Sports - News, Live Scores, Schedules, Fantasy Games, Video and more. - CBSSports.com. In the US, Fox has rights to show NFC games, CBS has the rights to show AFC games, NBC shows Saturday night games, ESPN shows Monday night games, and NFL Network shows Thursday night games.
If you're willing to pay a little bit, you can get audio from the radio broadcasts of games, or watch games online.
There are some games that are considerecd classic, and you can buy DVDs of those online, or sometimes they release a DVD set with all of the games of a particular team for a particular season, but those are usually just the Superbowl champions.
If you'd be willing to pay a little more, you're more than welcome to fly to the US and watch a game or two at my place. I have a nice 106' screen with an HD projector in my basement.

Goodbye Fingernails
Oh what a nerve jangler!!
England cling on by their absolute fingertips to draw against South Africa in Capetown. I have no fingernails left.
BBC Online commentary writes:
1601: Cricket, I love you. Graham Onions, I love you. Farewell fingernails, farewell spleen, farewell any chance of sleep tonight. What an extraordinary match. 17 balls survived by the final pair, 11 survived by no.11 Onions alone. He's making a habit of this, isn't he?
From Shay Ladd, London, TMS inbox: "And Onions has reduced the South Africans to tears... That would normally be too awful a joke to make but I am dancing round the office with my shirt over my head - my judgement has clearly been compromised!"
1558: Eng 296-9
Final ball of the match: LEFT ALONE! LEFT ALONE! ENGLAND WIN THE DRAW - REPEAT, ENGLAND WIN THE DRAW!

If they did that it would make them just seem like bad losers
England "Win the draw" - How nonsensically accurate is that statement? That summarises the lunacy that is the sport of cricket.

The Ashes Returns
I realise that parctically nobody but me here cares but - It is Ashes time again!!
This time in Aus. Day 3 of the first test match is about to commence. Aus in the stronger position after 2 days of play.
England were slapped 5-0 on the last tour to Aus in 2007 but since then England have climbed the world rankings and Australia have plummeted. England supporters have high hopes for this tour. England haven't won a series in Australia since 1986!!!
So far things are not going quite to plan for England.........

Re: The Ashes Returns
England win the draw!!!!!
After being on the ropes after 3 days of play England come back with a batting display that breaks multiple records and saves the game.
4 more test matches to play. Next one starts Friday. To win the ashes back from England Aus will need to actually win more matches than England. A drawn series means England "win".

I watched the Gridiron game played here in London (at Wembley stadium) last month.

It was surprisingly good fun.

Excuse me? I may have been down and out for a few weeks, but I have kept up with the test. Though I admit the trials and tribulations of this season's Dallas Cowboys have kept me somewhat pre-occupied. Shame, really. Well ... next year.
Anyway, watched Cook make history and the Aussies get butter-fingers.
I didn't get to go over this past year so it was good to see The Gabba again on the videos. That is where I first learned to appreciate this rather curious sport.
So, Congrats to England on a great Test. Now die, scumbags!
On to Adelaide!

The more you watch and learn the more addicted you will become. It may already be too late for you. If you get into "tailgating" then you will know you have been hopelessly overwelmed. You are ours!

As long as the Aussies keep catching like schoolgirls the series will be ours.

Friday. I have several bets going with Aus members of staff at work. Adelaide is the one they seem to think they will win.
