Re: Surprise
Cricket was bigger than baseball in the U.S. until around the time of the civil war.
Ouch. That is indeed faint praise.

Under a government which imprisons any unjustly, the true place for a just man is also in prison. Thoreau: Civil Disobedience (1846)
I would say here something that was heard from an ecclesiastic of the most eminent degree; ‘That the intention of the Holy Ghost is to teach us how one goes to heaven, not how the heaven goes.’ Galileo Galilei 1615.

Re: Cricket...Nobody understands Cricket.
"Wow, that was a sweet 6-4-2" they would have very little idea that I was discussing the fact that the ball was caught by the shortstop, thrown to the second basemen for out number one, then thrown to the first baseman for the second out, or better known as a 6-4-2 double play.
Actually, nobody would get it because you've bollixed up the numbering system. I doubt you've ever seen a 6-4-2 DP. The first baseman is '3' not '2'. The catcher is '2'.

I believe that a scientist looking at nonscientific problems is just as dumb as the next guy.
