C.S. writes: I can't vote with Internet Explorer. When I click on the Like icon, it just says "Error on Page" in the bar at the bottom. Same for me (also on IE8). For those in the same boat until Percy fixes it, it works if you refresh the page after clicking the icon.

it works if you refresh the page after clicking the icon. You're right! That "Like" I gave you was with IE8 and appeared after a refresh.

I've proposed some sort of variation of this before. As I see it, the membership should only have the "Like" selection available.
I would put the "Dislike" choice into the hands of the various admins, where the dislike is based on the forum guidelines. Also, it would be nice to have the "Like" tallies on the topic index page. Then you can more easily find those supposedly superior messages. Adminnemooseus Added by edit: Member ratings - Values for "Likes" and "Dislikes" would each be a raw number and an average for the last 90 days/500 messages. Eg. - A member having posted 100 messages and having received 30 "Like" votes would have a like rating of 30/.300 or 30%. It would also be nice to be able to find a given member's rated messages. Say, a link that would bring up a member message list of the most recent 30 rated messages. At this time, I (Adminnemooseus) have a +20 rating - I have no idea what that rating is based on. Edited by Adminnemooseus, : See above. Please be familiar with the various topics and other links in the "Essential Links", found in the top of the page menu. Amongst other things, this is where to find where to report various forum problems.

Aproximately, it would mean that the ratio of "likes" to "dislikes" given on your posts in the last 90 days is 60/40. I say "aproximately" because if an individual member has given you, for example, two likes, it will only count as one. Also, for example, one like and two dislikes from an individual will just count as the balance (one dislike). Percy will correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that's supposed to be how it works. Your +20 could be the result of, for example, 12 likes and 8 dislikes if those come from 20 different individuals. But it's unlikely to be that simple because of those who have voted on your posts more than once.

I will soon be making some minor modifications to the new message rating system:
By the way, the time period and limit of 90-days/500-messages is easily modifiable through the control panel, so I'd be interested in hearing if anyone has arguments for other values. Edited by Admin, : Change author. Edited by Admin, : Add sig.

The 90 days will give odd and fairly random results for people who haven't posted much during the period. Why not just go with the 500 posts, meaning all posts for newcomers with less than 500? BTW, Moose mentioned his rating, but I can't see it (I can see all others). IE8, again.

A more informative system would be to tally likes and dislikes separately, rather than providing an aggregate.
What does a score around 0 tell you? Well either the person in question is blandly neutral and has never attracted attention any way, or is a divisive and polarizing figure who has been the object of outrage and admiration in equal measure ... and both these people are represented by the same number?

Well either the person in question is blandly neutral and has never attracted attention any way, or is a divisive and polarizing figure who has been the object of outrage and admiration in equal measure ... and both these people are represented by the same number? That's correct, and it relates to another point under this system. What are we supposed to be aiming for? If I saw myself with something "high", like a +85, and then noticed that you were on +55, what should I think? I might come to the conclusion that Adequate is being more successful at making posts that creationists object to, and that I should be working a bit harder on it! And given the current makeup of the membership, if a creationist finds himself in the + area, should he be pleased or worried? And your bland poster might possibly get 5 "likes" over 90 days (very easy) and no dislikes, giving him a score of 100 instead of 0. Having said that, I don't think anyone much takes it too seriously, and it'll be interesting to see the relative effects of the labeled ratings as compared to the anonymous ones. I think Percy is working on it with a view to future projects, and I'm happy to be a guinea pig for anything he wants to experiment with.

The thumbs down rating has become a place where some people are just continuing their personal attacks. As Artemis Ent freely admits.

I don't think the admins should have the capability of ever voting on whether or not the like a post.
If there is an admin that has likes and dislikes and administers based on those, then that admin should be removed.Anyone so limited that they can only spell a word one way is severely handicapped!

On the todo list is a moderator demerit system that would be completely independent of the message rating system. I haven't designed it yet, but I think the demerit indication should be visible to all. Demerits would expire after a predefined time period settable through the control panel, perhaps a week would be a good time period. They could be assigned for any reason depending upon the discussion board, but of course at this board it would only be for Forum Guidelines violations. Members who accumulate some predefined number demerits at one time would be subject to moderator action. Moderators would be able to get an ordered list of members with more than 0 demerits.
This should make it possible to detect members who are causing problems in threads moderated by different moderators.
