This is a good idea, I'll put it on the todo list. I probably wouldn't do a folder of bookmarks, but instead add a dropdown menu on each thread page with the member's bookmarks. The top item would be bookmarks for the current thread, and if has bookmarks for other threads they would come later, and you could have optional notes, e.g.:
Thread Bookmarks Memories of Pangaea (Current Thread) Message 7 Message 19 (have to research this one) The Eyes Have it Message 21 Message 237 (includes good reference for eye anatomy) Message 283 Should also be possible to include bookmarks for any page, not just thread pages.

So I was left wondering what a second tier of bookmarks would add to the 'user experience'.About the only think I thought might be additional functionality is having a "Bookmark this message" button which would add a direct link to that message to the browser's bookmarks. (It is already possible to bookmark individual messages in your browser - but this would make it a little less fiddly.) Or maybe instead make the "Message 310 of 317" a link to itself - allowing people to right click and select "Bookmark this link...". Just some thoughts... Edited by Panda, : No reason given. Hi Panda,
I'm hoping to do more with it then just bookmarks, though I think even just bookmarks would be very useful. I wouldn't like cluttering up my main bookmark list with a bunch of bookmarks specific to EvC Forum. While you can organize your bookmarks hierarchically in any browser, no browser makes this very easy, and there would be no organizing by thread or forum or other possible keys. Organizing bookmarks hierarchically is a dreary exercise. But beyond organization, imagine the utility of being able to read a message then click on a little link next to it that added it to your EvC Forum bookmarks, all organized by forum and thread. Another click and the bookmark is removed. If a portion of your bookmarks were organized like this:
The Eyes Have it Message 21 Message 237 (includes good reference for eye anatomy) Message 283 Imagine being able to click on The Eyes Have it and having displayed a page with just those messages. I'm sure there are other possibilities. Of course, I won't be getting to this anytime soon.

Deleting the spammers messages seems to have harmed the "jump to first unread index".

All the spammers messages are deleted, so I need to know which threads you've discovered were affected.

It was the Water thread IIRC but it seems that it self corrected.

"You are trying to display a deleted message. Please click your Back button and try again."
I had clicked on the blue arrow for the first unread message of a thread. Apparently, that first unread message was the one from a spammer that had been deleted. I think you need to change the logic to the first existing unread message, or to the last message if there is no existing unread message.Jesus was a liberal hippie |

Jar and Nwr,
Thanks for the info, problem is fixed. The algorithm for determining the oldest unread message already handled the case where it was missing (deleted), but the MySQL query was erroneously including both deleted and normal messages (deleted messages aren't actually deleted, they're just marked with a delete flag - actual removal from the database requires an expunge). The message display code *does* check the deleted flag and issues the message when it is handed a message with that flag. I regret I can't test better, but I've written more code than I can test. This kind of help is really valuable, so thanks again.

Tried to search for answer to this with no success...
When I hover over the red and green cheers/jeers results buttons on my wife's PC I normally get a list of who cheered or jeered. On my notebook I don't get this, but I get an error warning at the bottom left of page with the following details:
Webpage error details User Agent: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 8.0; Windows NT 5.1; Trident/4.0; .NET CLR 1.1.4322; .NET CLR 2.0.50727; .NET CLR 3.0.4506.2152; .NET CLR 3.5.30729)Timestamp: Sun, 5 Feb 2012 23:01:48 UTC Message: 'hb.div.style' is null or not an objectLine: 744 Char: 5 Code: 0 URI: http://www.evcforum.net/dBoard.js I am using internet explorer 8 on Windows XP Pro v 5.1

Thanks for the detailed information, that gives us a real head start. The problem is a bit unusual because it concerns something that has been basic and fundamental to Javascript for a long time. The "style" field of displayed HTML objects has been there since almost the beginning, and the error is saying that the "style" field for a basic "div" object does not exist. I don't see how that could happen.
Many links on EvC webpages bring up a hoverbox of information when you hover over them. What happens when you hover over other links, such as members' names or the message links like the "Message 324" that you see at the top of bottom of this message. Do you get the same error? Have you tried shutting down and restarting IE? Or rebooting? --Percy

None of the links provide a hoverbox on my machine and they never have - in fact I only realised they existed when I used a different machine. I always get the same error.
Perhaps I should see if there are any patches for IE 8 and see if that helps, or is there a seperate Javascript add-on/update? I'm not too stressed if we cant get a fix, it doesn't really impede my use of the site. Thanks.

Running EvC through Firefox now and the problem has disappeared - maybe it had something to do with my security settings? Anyway all good now.

Hi RAZD!
Thanks for reporting this. I think it should should only extend to the end of your message, which means the end of the current table cell. This is already on the list (for blockquote, not strike, but it's the same issue), but there is no specific schedule at this time.

I was attempting to give a jeer to Message 764, but I found that I couldn't.
I assume that this is because the poster is inactive. When I jeer a post, it is the post, not the member, that I am jeering. Whether the member is inactive seems irrelevant as to whether that post deserves a jeer.Jesus was a liberal hippie |
