Is it paradoxical and subversive?
Well yes and no: Russell was being sarcastic. His point is that this is just ordinary common sense unless one has a vested interest in being wrong.

Yes. I know. But presumably those with a more 'blessed are those who believe but do not see' approach to discerning what is real and what is not have a different take.
But no-one ever does have that as a general approach. There are in effect only two kinds of people: there are skeptics, and then there are people who are skeptics except which they want to give some particular favored idea a free ride.

Re: Evidence
It says the Heavens and Earth were CREATED.
Every formless star and planet was void of a solid geometrical shapes, but all matter that is here today was CREATED then, in that instant.
Not according to scientists.
But in any case, if that was true, the passage might as well read: "In the beginning God created the Apple Macintosh", and you could still read it in such a way as to interpret it as being true. This is not a tribute to the wisdom of the Bible, but to your ability to read anything however you want.

Re: ... Fundamentalist are those who refuse to acknowledge evidence...
Socrates, of course, doubted that postulate and said, "Belive nothing you hear and only half of what you see."
Reference, please?

Re: ... Fundamentalist are those who refuse to acknowledge evidence...
Isn't that EXACTLY why Feynman says the Wave/particle observation is the fundamental issue for Physics in this next century???
No.
