My 13 year old son likes the Ramones; I explained the best way that I could what it was to be a punk back when it all began, and that it had nothing to do with the hair and clothes. That came later as a means to identify them; the punk scene was quite political and aware of what was happening at the time.
The stuff that's out now labeled as punk, is just a way for bands to make more money playing music that sounds (in a small way) like the old punk. But the point is lost; the Sex Pistols were terrible musicians and the only thing they had going for them was the shock that they invoked.
After others started inmitating them, the shock wore off rather quickly.
When Avril Levine (sp?) had her 15 minutes, I almost through my guitar through the TV when they announced her as being 'punk'.
