I think that his point is that homosexuals can marry in every state...as long as they are willing to marry someone of the opposite sex whom they actually don't want to marry.Why does he think that this is having the same rights as non-gays? You'll have to ask him.

Well, he can be forgiven for thinking you were saying something that made sense. What you said was like saying that they had freedom of speech in the former Soviet Union -- anyone could voice an opinion on state policy as long as their opinions were within the bounds set by the state. That is true in a trivial sort of way, but makes no sense in a serious discussion about rights.
