As one of those who was surplused, I have some very definite thoughts on this matter.
Getting old sucks!

In tests of working memory, processing speed, and other basic, fundamental cognitive skills, there is no appreciable difference between younger and older people until the older group gets to around age 60.
Damnit!

Which is more important, reality, legality or the beliefs of the hiring agency?

In the issue of working and getting hired as you age.
Do my actual capabilities matter as much as what those capabilities are perceived as being by the hiring authority?
Does legality actually play much if any of a role?

* as an aside - interesting how companies now go on about the snakeoil that is knowledge management. If knowledge is so important, why in times of crisis, do they shed their "most valuable resource"?
