I have no reason to attack your position. But you must understand that some of us choose a different starting point from which to begin the investigation.

PecosGeorge:
. . . I'm fairly good in German.
(chuckle). . more than I can say, but therein lies an anecdote.
My son had organized a local chess club in the university town where he lived. And there was a wonderful specialty coffee shop that allowed the club to meet and use the tables there on Wednesday nights.
I would often join them for some play and carried a flexible board with the pieces in a separate box. As it happened, the pieces were made in Germany so all the writing on the box was in German.
At one point during play a darling young female waitress, who appeared to be about high school age, came up to my table to refresh my coffee. Seeing the German writing on the box she asked me, (in what appeared to be wide-eyed wonder), if I was from Germany.
Now, when I was in high school (back in the dark-ages), I had taken two years of German, though I have forgotten most of it through years of disuse. Nevertheless, I felt that I had retained just enough to briefly tease this young lady. So I replied: "Jah. Ich bin ein Deutschlander. Haben sie Deutsch in der schule?"
Her joy was palpable as she commenced to bombard me with rapid-fire and (to me) unintelligible Germanic speech. As it turned out, she had spent the majority of her young life living in Germany and had only recently returned with her parents to the U.S.
As I said, she was a delightful young lady and when her shift ended she allowed me to instruct her chess play; even if she didn't need my help with her German.
C'est la joie de vie,
Amlodhi
