Nothing on this earth would be of any use if it simply went away.
It doesn't, though. People die all the time, but the things they did are still here.

Uh-huh...
Eventually, humanity will cease to exist.
The world is changing, and not for the better.
As a result, many are wondering what will happen to them once they are deceased...what will happen to their spirit, the entity that gives them life. The Christian Bible seems to answer this question best, and in great detail.
Has anyone read Revelation? Many of the atrocities and events are occurring today. If you haven't, then I recommend it to you.

True, the sun that is responsible for all life on this planet is middle aged. It too will exhaust its Hydrogen fuel and die taking all life on this planet with it. What then? Who will be around to morn our passing? If it happened tomorrow or 8 billion years from now what difference in the Cosmological scheme of things would it make? The Universe will continue without the little blue planet 3rd from the sun. Mankind is but a brief blip on the radar screen of the cosmos. The significance of humanity is only significant to humanity. Get over it already. Do not worry about what happens when you die...get out there and start living.

Re: Uh-huh...
I've already started living. And I enjoy it. I just know there is something greater than this life. If people desire something, then its complement must exist. What do you desire most?
Note: Also, if the population of the earth continues to rise at such a rate, then humanity could possibly expire before the sun. Humanity hasn't been here long...it's obvious.

I desire the same thing many people on this message board do, including you. To know what is at the core of reality. To know if my conciousness is an illusion of my sensory perception. To know if there is truly a thinker behind the thought. To know if conciousness is a emergent property of energy/matter. If you figure any of these things out please enlighten me.

It makes a difference
It makes a difference to me whether we are alone or not. If there is other sentient life then our passing isn't as serious (though a loss none the less).
We will, of course, pass. The question is: Will we leave some descendant species? It's not looking 100% sure by any means.

Re: Uh-huh...
You're on the right track. Infinity, however, is not a comprehensible thought, since we are all finite beings. Everything on this earth will have its end. The human mind, of course, is the most potent natural force on the planet, but not in the universe. This is known to many as God. God, the supreme Being, originator of all virtue. Concepts have their source in Him.
On a different note, a Christian has an understanding of evil. They believe that there is a malevolent force that will keep people from learning the truth, and steep the populace in ignorance. This force is known as Lucifer, the Satan who deceives the people. The good news is that this evil is not the dominant force, and is only present in the absence of light (the same concept applies with natural light and darkness).
However, consciousness remains an important factor, but is not the most potent. The greater force, which many doubt exists, still remains. This force is God.

Unless we migrate off of this planet, I agree. However, if the human race were to scatter across the galaxy it is very probable that some vestige of humanity will survive far into the future. Of course, future humanity may not be recognizable to current humans, but our history will probably survive.

The world is changing, and not for the better.
Let's see. In the last 100 years we have seen:
--Doubling of life expectancy
--major reduction in infant mortality
--the invention of leisure time for all citizens, not just nobility
--safer working conditions
--major advancements in technology
--landing on the moon
--probes sent to numerous planets in our solar system
What is getting worse? What? Gay marriage? Separation of Church and State? Given the diseases and conditions of the past (eg, Black Plague, Crusades, average life expectancy of 30 years), we are living in the Golden Age of Humanity.

Many of those same atrocities have been occuring since the penning of Revelations. Funny how every generation of christians thinks that the second coming of the Christ is just around the corner. After 2,000 years, the rest of humanity is tired of "Cry Wolf."

Unfortunately, most often it is called Christianity.

Biggest and Badest?
The human mind, of course, is the most potent natural force on the planet, but not in the universe.
Where do you get that idea? If the yellowstone caldera does another super-eruption we'll find out about potent natural forces.

Re: Biggest and Badest?
The human mind is most potent because it actually has the ability to maintain and channel energies into a particular direction. We can control raging rivers, and all sorts of other things. Notice, I said most potent, not most POWERFUL.
And to answer that question concerning humanity:
The human populace is not in a state of decay because of technological advancement, but because of its own ignorance.

Re: absodamnlutely
And just what has this got to do with anything? Following Christ and his teachings is evil/ignorant now?
Even if we state. " some christians are ignorant/evil". That doesn't mean every evil/ignorance is christian.
Yet you must still know what you are saying if you state the statement. I suggest you read a definition of "christian" from the dictionary, before implying such things. You see, I can understand a christian who makes mistakes, can still be one. But the antithesis won't qualify the person.

Re: absodamnlutely
It is very much a factor. Please read the section quoted, particularly
They believe that there is a malevolent force that will keep people from learning the truth, and steep the populace in ignorance.
All too often, and throughout history, the force that keeps people from learning the truth and that keeps them steeped in ignorance has been Christianity.
