Re: A cult
quote:
The absence of Christ does not a cult make.
See, even YODA says you're wrong. Just face it, man (:.
No, but seriously, I think the definition of cult is too loose to have an argument over. I would say a cult is any group of people that A. hold similar views that they believe to be the ultimate truth on something, B. practice activities or rituals that differ from every day activities, and C. that require others of their group to do certain things to maintain status in their group. In this sense, I would indeed call many religions cults. However, there are plenty of you that will disagree, which is perfectly fine. In fact, I think we're all right. It's just one of those things...
What matters is what organizations do, not what you classify them as. I've met several Mormans, and they've all been pretty nice.

Re: If you
quote:
If you phase over to scripture during a conversation with them, they redirect to the book of mormon as the authority.
Hence cult.
God talks to me, I hope you listen to hear him talk to you.
You realize that someone like me, an agnostic, takes that as: "If you mention our holy writings to them, they mention their holy writings, hence they are a cult. Oh, and by the way, I talk to imaginary people."
Sorry to be offensive, but you have a really lame basis for segregating Mormans, as Jar is pointing out in a much more detailed way. I still say most Christian churches are a cult as much as Mormans, but then, you don't seem to be addressing the point that the definition of "cult" is relative to each person.

Re: A cult

no it does not matter how nice people are. Without Christ, nice is just and only nice
Damn, and I always thought that selfless guy who gave all his fortune to charity and lived only to help others was a good guy and mattered ): . What a crazy, crazy world we live in!

Re: A cult

BTW string theory with it's extra dimensions could account for the unknown yet ever present domain of consciousness and even heaven..don't you think ???
Not that this has anything to do with the topic at hand, but I doubt it. The hypothesis/idea of extra dimensions came out of unusual results dealing with gravity and other forces. Yes, I suppose it's possible, but then again, what isn't? I'm actually about to read Brian Greene's "The Elegant Universe", which deals with this exact subject. Perhaps I'll start a thread about it once I finish it.
