Why? What, from the report, gives you the impression that Tacitus is doing anything but reporting the position of Christians?

One would think he would add a qualifier, as I mentioned before. "According to their traditions . . "
I haven't seen the whole passage, have you? Is it possible that he did qualify it in a part of the passage we haven't read?
At any rate, resting the case for the existence of Jesus on what a writer didn't say seems like a flimsy basis.
