Re: Does this count? No, not really.
This is more like a citizen (even if a church) in free exercise of their political rights rather than them attempting to negate the rights of others.
I am prepared to be wrong, but.....
aren't those rights granted us by way of paying taxes? Do non tax paying "citizens" have the same rights as the rest?
Again, I am fully prepared to be woefully wrong.

Re: Does this count? No, not really.
I only meant insofar as Paul classifying the church as a citizen. Churches don't pay taxes, but he corrected me on that so....nevermind the issue.

Re: Does this count? No, not really.
Payment of taxes has no baring on whether the First Amendment applies or not.
Ok, but you mentioned voting. I personally see voting as being separate from speaking.
Take, for example, a felon. He has NOT lost his first amendment rights ro speak, but he HAS lost his right to vote.
{abe}
NEVERMIND lol. I had other things on my mind and got confused. Disregard. Sorry for derailing.

Re: Does this count? No, not really.
Yea, that's great and all, but says nothing about labeling the church itself as a citizen. The church itself doesn't pay any of those taxes.

and I think that a lot of Catholics feel the same way.
Yea....the ones directly effected. The rest say "well, it wasn't MY church...."

I've noticed you do this on several occasions: if you want to reply to numerous posts....reply to numerous posts, don't lump them all into the same reply.

Also, this FIB doesn’t take advice from cheese-heads, ever.
Northern IL born and raised, bitch. I'm no god damn cheese head.
What's also funny is how you've not said word one about the firemen or PD being allowed either.

Re: Gay Ban LIfted
It should be interesting to see what kinds of problems our military will have to deal with in this transitional period.
What makes you think there will be ANY problems? The only areas where there could possibly be any problems are in infantry type units with idiot jarhead/grunts who are already ignorant, so it's unlikely a gay infantryman will come out anyways. not for fear of legal repurcussion, but for fear of being shot in the back or getting a sock party in his honor.

Re: Gay Ban LIfted
You just named the main problem I foresee. I hope I am wrong.
But DADT did nothing for these guys as far as hiding in the ranks. It's just that now they can come out and not be legally penalized for it. However, they can still get fucked with by fellow ignorant soldiers. Think about it: in states where gay marriage was "legalized", did it stop hillbillies from gay bashing?

Re: Gay Ban LIfted
Maybe the ones who are getting F@#$ will now be able to stand up for themselves without fear of being discharged.
If the fucking is good enough, they definitely cannot stand up for themselves and there will be plenty of discharging. ZING!
Anyways, yes, I agree it IS a step in the right direction. It never should have been implemented in the first place. However, we are still a long way from complete tolerance in the armed forces. And it is my subjective opinion that infantrymen are the ones who scored too low on the ASFAB to do anything else. Ignorance, stupidity and bigotry go hand in hand, IMO.

Only in the South.....
Jesus or jail? Alabama town offers options for serving time
Article writes:
Starting this week, under a new program called Operation ROC (Restore Our Community), local judges in Bay Minette, Alabama, will give those found guilty of misdemeanors the choice of serving out their time in jail, paying a fine or attending church each Sunday for a year.
What about current churchgoers who commit a misdemeanor?
Another, non CNN article about it:
"I have just two words for this ill-considered scheme: blatantly unconstitutional, said the Rev. Barry W. Lynn, executive director of Americans United. Government simply can’t put people in a position where their only choice is Jesus or jail.
Bay Minette Police Chief Mike Rowland says 56 churches have agreed to take part in the program, dubbed Operation Restore Our Community. Rowland says the plan is legal because no one is forced to go to church — they can choose fines or incarceration instead.

Re: Only in the South.....
Is that supposed to make it somehow ok? It's a "get out of punishment" card for christians.....
{abe}
The letter goes on to say, The Program would be unconstitutional even if participants could, as the City has asserted, attend the religious service of their choice. For one, any such choice is purely theoretical: only churches participate in the Program and so in practice defendants must attend Christian services. In any event, the Program would violate the Constitution even if other religions did participate because the First Amendment also requires the government to remain neutral between religion and non-religion.

Re: Only in the South.....
I fail to see how this is an establishment of a religion.
If it were only mosques involved, you would. Oh, but wait: what about those of no faith? They get to "choose" punishment while those who already go to church get to......go to church for "punishment"? I didn't expect any religious persons to see how wrong it is when it is YOUR religion that is being pushed.
Who am I kidding: you're an admitted troll. Why bother.

Re: Only in the South.....
STRAWMAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I don't go to church. I already stated in the previous post that I would choose the fines. try and keep up, ok?
Ok, admittedly the first sentence could be construed as a possible strawman. However, it had nothing to do with whether or not YOU go to church. I'm glad you are ok with the choice to pay fines OR possibly go to a church (one that is alligned with your belief set). However, as someone of NO belief, I find it repulsive that someone of that belief set could just go about their sunday ritual for "punishment".

Re: I Shall Be Released
I can see your point. However, I find it ridiculous that going to church is equated with better community, hence the title of the program.
