quote:You know, nitpicking is viewed by many as just a form of intellectual dishonesty. Consider the following. Lawyer: Mr. Johnson, did you or did you not hit little Billy with your car? Defendant: No, sir, I did not. Lawyer: But I have here a police report saying you confessed to the police at the scene of the accident that you ran over little billy with your car. Defendant: I was driving my van. Technically, it's not a car. This form of intellectual dishonesty (nitpicking) might make you look smart among your friends, but it will never get you far in life. You are complaining that "educated" people look down on uneducated folks. This is why. "Educated" people debate with each other honestly and in good faith. They pay close attention to important details while discarding the unimportant ones. "Uneducated" people seem to only be able to nitpick the semantics, make a big deal out of unimportant details while ignoring the important ones, and then pat themselves on the back. On the social side, nobody likes nitpickers. In my freshman year, I befriended a smart-wannabe who was constantly nitpicking everything I said. One night, we were watching an episode of star trek deep space nine when about 3,000 jem hada warships with hundreds of thousands (possibly millions) of crewmen and soldiers onboard were wiped out of existence by a group of god-like aliens called the prophets. I said that I kinda felt sorry for those people even though they were the bad guys. This friend of mine had to comment that those people didn't exist so technically I couldn't feel sorry for them. I thought for a moment and then responded, "ok, so I feel sorry for the idea that millions of people were wiped out of existence in a split second." I stopped hanging out with that guy and I don't think he made many friends because when you talk to him he constantly nitpick every word you say rather than paying attention to what you are saying. Intellectual dishonesty, nothing more.

I used to spend hours reading those quotations and tracking down the quoted people. Sometimes, I have to wonder if a lot of them are nothing more than trolls. It's hard to imagine anyone that ignorant yet so arrogant.

quote:For a moment, let's assume that we are talking about speaking in tongues. Are you saying that men are allowed to speak in tongues in church but women are not? But anyway, let's look at the whole chapter.
quote: I don't see anything there that would drastically change the fact that women are not allowed to speak in church and that it is disgraceful for a woman to speak in church. Edited by teen4christ, : fixed db problems

ICANT, not to ruin the mood or anything, but I'm really curious about how you rationalize that particular passage in 1 Cor about women in churches. Myself and a few others are keeping our eyes out for your explanation.
Take care.

quote:But why only women if that was what Paul was talking about? quote:Seems kinda defeat the purpose of discussion, doesn't it? No, really, I really want to know what you have to say about this. I haven't heard an explanation for this passage before. Good night to you.

quote:I once read a chinese story. Bare with me, it will make sense. The story goes like this. There live a husband, a wife, and 2 children. The husband is a respected public official. The 2 children are scholarly students. But the wife is viewed by many as not too bright. One day, while the husband is eating with his friends, the "dumb wife" topic somehow came up. His friends, one by one, begin to tell how dumb their wives are. Not to be outdone, the husband tells his friends that his wife is the dumbest one of all, and he will demonstrate it. He tells one of his friends to pick up the phone and call his home and to tell the "dumbest wife" that the friend is her son and that he needs X (very large) sum of money right now because he is in trouble. So, the friend proceeds to call the wife of the husband and tells her that he is in trouble and need X amount of money right now. But she can't see him so she'll have to go to the end of the street, leave the money there, and go back home. Even though the voice didn't sound like that of her son, the wife agrees. Later that day after she had placed the money in the dark alley, the husband and 2 children come home with the money and begin to yell at the wife. "How could you be so dumb? Couldn't you tell it wasn't our son's voice?" Crying, the wife answers, "Yes, I realized that it wasn't our son's voice, but there was still a chance that it could have been our son in trouble, even if that chance was very very small." It looks like a troll, it sounds like a troll, it even smells like a troll. But there's chance it's just a lost soul, even if that chance is infinitesimally small. quote:A troll is a mythological creature that is obnoxious and is bent on causing disorder within a community through mischief. In internet term, it is someone that intentionally post messages that are volatile in nature to attain strong reactions from members within the internet community. Basically, it's someone that gets a kick out of driving people crazy. I've had a few encounters with these critters in the past.
