Hi folks
I'll be up in New Hapmpshire for the rest of the week touring Phillips Exeter Academy (PEA)*, where I plan to micturate* for my Junior and Senior years. This is to serve two purposes: 1) To socialize me. Few would know form reading my posts that I am eminently socially inept. Having been home schooled through the 8th grade and having only two friends both living 90 miles away I do not suffer my peers gladly. 2) The disciplined structure I've grown accustomed to was sorely disturbed this last year due to my stupid, thieving, pot smoking, Baltimore cousin. I will be boarding at the academy, away from the disturbance, in the hope that I'll be able to give my full attention to my studies. Has anyone here attended or taught at PEA? Any favored dorms? Most of the recruitment talk I've gotten so far is hard sell about their fun traditions. I don't like fun traditions. I think they are trying to appeal to my mum and dad. I fear I'll be ever an outsider. I'm not particularly good at inculcating myself into social settings. How cliquey is residential life at PEA? Ok, a bit of a touchy question, as a black kid, a smart, black kid, do I risk being a token? I really, really hate being introduce to visiting pols. And anything anyone else thinks of great import. My opinion has never been sought before on the procession of my life. I'd like to have a semi-informed one. Thanks

I think people might be ignoring this, lyx2no, because they find it hard to believe that you're a 9th grader, and think you might be joking.
If it's true, however, I predict a bright future. I just looked the place up, and it's as old as the U.S. of A!!! Co-Ed, as well, so you're living with 500 teenage girls. And a 5 to 1 student/teacher ratio! Bloody hell! Isn't Uncle Percy from New Hampshire? Maybe he knows something about it, as 225 yr old schools can't be that common even in New England.

Shit man. Now I have to rethink all of my misconceptions about you.

You won't be taken as a token, don't worry a second about that. You should though get used to making your own decisions about your future, that's kind of a biggy.

And after you have been micturated for two years, you will be granulated?

Hopefully, he won't be on the receiving end of anyone else's micturation. You must be thinking of our kinky British boarding schools, where that kind of thing is probably traditional.

It is a very rational approach to think that fun traditions is a method to appeal to your parrents. Furthermore, it is good to maintain a disciplined approach to studies. However, I think you should try to think of why "fun traditions" could be a good thing. As you say, one of the purposes is to socialize you - and why would that be important to you?
There are many ways you can be a social person; the must natural to you would probably be the 'open-minded friendly and intelligent person, whom has a lot of interesting thing to say'. That is okay, you do not need to be the outgoing person, whom seek attention. I'm saying this as if it was a normal part of your education, and I think it should be; social life is very important, too. No matter what kind of future you end up with the skills to socialize with other is as, or even more important in a lot of cases, is more important than your academic knowledge and skills. When I'm saying this, it is because I assume and believe it is very important to be happy, or at least feel accomplished in life, and I hardly think a person can do that alone with schools, studies, academic results. In Denmark pupils and students are mostly taught with Appreciative pedagogy, I think it is called in English, approach. Dialogue and apprciations of your own experience as valuable are some of the key thoughts behind the term "Appreciative pedagogy". Since you seem to be a smart person you might try to read about this stuff. I have not read about PEA, but since they think of fun traditions as important, it might indicate that they take an Appreciative pedagogy approach. The most "extreme" proponents of AP would probably call general school system in England "indoctrinating". Just to give you a idea of what is it What have all of these thing to do with anything? Well, social life is an important factor in life according to AP. One of my point is you should try to be open-minded towards their "fun tradition" despite you might not find it meaningful to your life. I'm ramblin like a crazy here I guess and everything might not be too clear, but I hope it generates some thoughts useful to you, whether you agree with my ideas or not Good luck

Sounds like maybe you're going to be a modern Holden Caulfield, 60 years on. Which reminds me, J. D. Salinger died a couple of weeks ago. I haven't been around much recently, so did anyone post on the memorial thread?

Sounds like an interesting experience in the offering, lyx2no2.
Ok, a bit of a touchy question, as a black kid, a smart, black kid, do I risk being a token? I really, really hate being introduce to visiting pols. Well, you may already be a token, just by being admitted. What you have to decide is whether you are a token because you are black, or a token because you are intelligent. There will always be some people with hidden bigotry, and some that are blatant. My second year at Duke (in 1967) I took an engineering course from a professor that flunked four students in his class: all three girls and the one long haired yankee. You may also find more bias from rich kids against poor kids than based on color. But you need to define who you are.
Phillips Exeter Academy Looks like you'll be surrounded by some history in Exeter. you'll also be near the Robert Frost Farm (Derry, New Hampshire) - Wikipedia in Derry Some great opportunities.
Any favored dorms? Well, one of the girl ones would likely be a popular choice ... (boys tend towards practical jokes, yes?) Not one associated with sports would be my choice, but then I am a bit of a outsider, few friend type person. Enjoy. we are limited in our ability to understand
