You forgot one, subbie:
13. Marriage means a civil union between one man and one woman, and gays are not in any way excluded from this covenant.

Prop. 8 would be a good place to look. Seems like the majority agrees me me, and yet I'm such a bad boy on the boards. Bye.

Prop 8 was ADDED. where did it say this originally.
You mean Prop. 8 isn't good enough for you? It was passed by majority vote in the liberal state of California, not Alabama or Kansas. What do you have against voting on disputed social issues? That's how it works in America”we get to vote to decide. Otherwise, you have aristocentrism, which is something like tyranny of the minority. Bye.

But I'm for gay civil unions
I've never seen such a pitiful bunch of whiners in my life. Not even a popular vote is enough to make you guppies understand that "marriage" means a civil union between one man and one woman. While I support civil unions between homosexuals, I don't regard such contracts as marriages. Furthermore, I don't think a men's room should be regarded as a ladies' room, either, just because some group of people might think it's the right way to go (no pun intended). So let's all be friends and I try go along with established social practices. It's kinda like civilization, you know.

Government should only recognize civil unions and leave marriage to the churches.
Exactly! Why should anyone have a problem with this. It solves everything; it even helps a little to get the government out of our lives and our bedrooms. I should think the conservatives would embrace this concept. I would have no good reason or cause to refute a covenant bestowed upon any two people in the name of marriage if the matter was settled outside the law. I don't care what the churches do, anyway, since I'm an atheist.

Well, american citizens, for example, cannot be knighted. I'm not sure if you could equate marriage with noble titles, and I don't think that's where rueh was going.
I note that the American government does not issue Ph.D.s, either. Why should it? It has no business in that field. The American government leaves that business up to the educational institution. Now, it's true you can get a Ph.D. from some fluky school like Ambassador University in Big Sandy, TX, but hardly anybody is troubled by that. You could probably get a Savior Cadet license there, too, which enables you to officiate in all soul conversions. So what do I care about that? It doesn't affect my Ph.D. in the least bit, because it doesn't engage the law.

Carry on without me
I'm sticking with Moose's assertion in Message 35. If you guys want play on in the dark with your sad violin's you can do it without my supervision. California's Prop.8 is proof positive of how one legitimate majority feels about the issue. And for that they are called haters, nutjobs, bastards, and Jim Crows. It's too ridiculous for words. So I'm outta of this thread.

Minority opinion rules?
So when the SCOTUS overturned miscegenation laws in Loving v. Virignia, they were wrong to do so?
Then what would you have to whine about if neither California's Supreme Court nor SCOTUS overturned Prop.8? Would you prefer a government that operates on the principle of minority opinion rules? Now what do they call those kinds of governments, again? I'm trying to recall.
Tra-la-la.

When SCOTUS hears Prop. 8
When the SCOTUS overturned miscegenation laws in Loving v. Virginia, they were wrong to do so?
Ah, what was the SCOTUS vote on that, again? If the majority vote ruled then I'm fer it. If the minority vote ruled then I'm agin it. Seems only fair to me...just the way the American democratic system works. Somebody's got to interpret the U.S. Constitution, and we might yet get to see if SCOTUS overturns Prop. 8 on its constitutionality. I can abide with that.
But I'll tell you what. If SCOTUS ever overturned Rove v. Wade then I'm in the street the very next day to support a real cause worth marching for.
Carry on. Toodles.

Re: Minority opinion rules?
onfire writes:
How about just a government that operates on the principles of human equality?
But, onfire, you presume that "gay marriage" (an oxymoron in the face tradition) is an issue of human equality. You want to see the government legislate for homosexuality. Not everyone sees "gay marriage" as a human-rights issue. You know, there are other issues on the table involving human equality, as perceived by their respective plaintiffs. For example, there are those who believe that polygamy is a human-rights issue, too. So why not go out and march for their cause? (Hey, you might dig the Mormon chicks.)
Correct answer: Because it is only a matter of human opinion and not a matter of human equality.
