There is a way to get a "normal" desktop, but what little I used it, it was severely gimped. I am far more experienced with a PC than an average person and in my opinion, it was not at all intuitive. It seemed like an entirely new OS. This was even with the desktop view. For example: I opened the email client and fuck me if I couldn't close it. I had to actually reboot my VM just to get out of the email.
Now, for touch interfaces? I could see it catching on. Like the desktop monitors that are touch enabled. But to use this interface with a keyboard/mouse is god damned retarded."Science is interesting, and if you don't agree you can fuck off." -Dawkins

Can you imagine a touchscreen for a desktop?
That would be a pain in the ass. No way am I reaching up to my monitor when I have a nice, ergonomic mouse in a comfortable position. Touchscreens are perfect for tablets and phones. Not so much for desktops, unless you start creating new peripherals - like a touchscreen keyboard and mousepad. And at that point I cant tell what the benefit would be in turning my desktop into the equivalent of a Nintendo DS.The human understanding when it has once adopted an opinion (either as being the received opinion or as being agreeable to itself) draws all things else to support and agree with it. - Francis Bacon "There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. Can you imagine a touchscreen for a desktop? They already have them: Touchscreen Monitors That would be a pain in the ass. No way am I reaching up to my monitor when I have a nice, ergonomic mouse in a comfortable position. For most circumstances, I agree. Well, for ANY home use, I agree. This is what Win8 makes me think of:

I was aware that they already exist.
I'm also aware that sales are, shall we say, low. For the same reasons I mentioned. I understand that MS is trying to use a single OS for both touch devices and more traditional PCs and notebooks, as opposed to Apple's tactic of using two separate operating systems. I'd even be on board with that, if it was all we're talking about - I would love to have access to the same app repository on my desktop that I have on my phone/tablet and vice versa, so that I can seamlessly use the same apps across platforms. Not everything needs or would even work well with a touchscreen, but that's not important if you're not forced to do so. Unfortunately Win8 comes with a harsh performance hit, and because we're still looking at the initial launch, there are virtually no apps (as compared to the Apple store or the Google Play store) in the repository. Additionally, it's unclear to me whether MS will be taking the harsh level of control over their app repository that Apple currently uses, or if they'll leave software installation basically open, as does Google with Android. Time will tell. But as it is...Win8 is looking to me like a repeat of Vista. Touchscreens are perfect for tablets and phones. They also work nice behind the counters at Burger King.
Not so much for desktops, unless you start creating new peripherals - like a touchscreen keyboard and mousepad. What would you look at? The keyboard or the monitor? No way I am having my neck bent down staring at my 'keyboard' for a couple hours while I do computer work.Love your enemies!

MS is trying to force a tablet interface onto the desktop and it just doesn't work that way. Tablet interfaces suck as it is. Touch screens are a pain in the ass to use. The only reason people use their touch-screen phones to surf the web is because there just isn't a way to do it with a keyboard and mouse, and it wouldn't be practical even if there were. You just can't use that kind of an interface for doing real stuff on a computer. Unless real stuff means ringing up cheeseburgers. JonLove your enemies!

Yeah, I'm hoping they eventually develop useful voice interfaces. They're only sort of there now, with too much error and having to retry or repeat.

I'm holding out for a gestural interface. As a proficient touch typist, I want the device to read my fingers w/o needing a keyboard of any kind. Until then, I'll stick with keyboard and mouse--unless I'm afflicted against my will with a smart phone or tablet.

I demand a synaptic interface!

I haven't seen Minority Report, but yeah, I guess there's nothing new under the sun.
But I've thought for years that a device that could track my hands/fingers would be ideal--I'd also like to see a similar interface used to create/conduct music. I can type around 100 wpm on a physical keyboard (clocked at 120 wpm in my youth--I've slowed), and if I didn't have to fully complete those digit gestures, I bet I could double that. Add point and double-point, plus all the touchscreen stuff in 3-D instead of 2-D and without actual touch, and I think even voice would have difficulty matching the input density you could achieve."If you can keep your head while those around you are losing theirs, you can collect a lot of heads."

Yep. Here it is: Minority Report fiction becoming a reality
Large-scale motion and gesture-controlled computing is no longer confined to science fiction movies, as Los Angeles-based Oblong Industries again demonstrates its exciting software that gives users a fresh new way to interact with computers.
