Did you really mean "all atheists DETEST the bible"?
I know how all atheists detest the Bible
Hi Hangdawg, it's been awhile.
detest as " To dislike intensely; abhor."? I think there is a continuum of attitudes on the Bible and am certain that there are people who detest it, but all atheists? I don't think Brian detests it. I'm not an absolute atheist so my not detesting probably doesn't count.
What I do admit to is being disappointed that intelligent educated people such as yourself in this day and age still use that ancient approximation of explanation as a literal model for explaining the universe.
The books of the Bible document the very real advances in thinking in their day but to take them as the final word is exasperating to me. I do understand that your religion has had thousands of years to evolve to meet the needs of the ego as it deals with the uncertainties of life and that effectiveness argues against giving it up. I understand the strong cultural conditions of religions that support the ego and the group within a world view.
Human society has for the last few centuries begun to undergo changes that are fueled by science and the technology it's discoveries enable. This transition is a stress for the social belief systems developed thousands of years ago. That is how I read the debate in this dialogue. The old views trying to find a way to assimilate the new theories and paradigms.
Buddhist and Advaitist thought has a different approach to this as does Wittgenstein but as these systems of thought are philosophical rather than scientific or religious they don't seem to fit well in this forum. The mystery may be much more present than the idea of first cause suggests. I myself quite like faith but wish folks would put faith in BEING itself rather than the claims of any humans to speak for "God".
