Not really. I think you're making a mountain out of a molehill here. The whole manner in which Jesus is the image of the invisible God is that He is God made visible, a theme reinforced throughout the NT epistles. It's fair to say that in religious writings words do not necessarily have the clinical and precise scientific meanings we might attach to them.

I lean more to the view that this is a hangover from a polytheistic substratum to the Genesis myths - it also neatly explains why the name of God in Genesis 1 - Elohim - is technically a plural. Otherwise I'd expect this usage to continue through the OT.
