How is the Phelps' style of evangelism specifically disallowed by the doctrine of other fundamentalists that hold the same opinion as the Phelps'?
I'm not sure that it is disallowed. That's why there isn't a lot of criticism of Phelps coming from other fundies.
Jesus said (matt 7:20) "Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them." But, judged by their practice, the slogan of fundamentalism has become "by their rhetoric ye shall know them." They have abandoned the teachings of Jesus.

Re: How aware are you Americans?
The thing is, in the UK this type of fundy Xian, and there are some, is very low-key, and I think unless you are involved in Chrsitianity in some way or are a student of religion you may not even be aware of them at all.
Here, all you need are some rhetorical skills, and a few bucks. With that you can setup a radio station and broadcast all kinds of nonsense. And if you set yourself up as a religion, you can avoid a lot of the close scrutiny that might otherwise occur.

Yes, we know people by their fruits, good or bad. It's how we treat them, or act towards them that is being screwd up by people like phelps.
Take a look at Why is Israel getting away with these atrocities?. What I find striking, is the racist attitude of some of our fundamentalist posters. It is by those fruits that I know them.

Re: How aware are you Americans?
This "leftist media" is a myth of the far right (media).
And as I already said, and now repeat, the "centrist" media is a myth of the far left.
You are correct. The media is right of center.
I want media that reports the truth. Instead we have a media that panders to the right, apparently out of fear of Bush and his gang of fascist thugs.
By the way, in the past I have voted for both Reagan and Bush Sr., for president. But that was before the Republican party went over to the dark side.

I guess talking about ideological causes of actions amounts to "racism."
No. I was talking about hateful statements made about the Palestinian people.

I'm aware of no hateful statements about the Palestinian people, only analyses of the ideology that drives them.
That's already pretty troubling.
Message 28 already denies that Palestinians are persons.
Message 29 denies that Palestinians can have ordinary human feelings.
Message 112 also denies that Palestinians can have normal human feelings.
I cringe when I see such unchristian statements being made. I cringe all the more when the people who make them consider themselves Christians.

And by the way, YOUR messages are a perfect example of the kind of judgmentalness that Jesus condemned.
I judged behavior, not persons.
Okay, I did make judgemental statements about Bush. But he is a politician, and politicians set themselves up to be judged as part of the democratic process.

Re: God's judgment
Faith writes:
What an absolutely bizarre reading of Numbers 5:11 on.
As far as I know, it is a somewhat standard reading, though perhaps not the one preferred by evangelicals. Take a look at the footnotes in the NIV translation. It also appears to coincide with the reading in the marginal notes of the Skeptics Annotated Bible.
The bitterness might have been caused by ergot, a fungal contaminent of barley, and with a history of use as an abortifacient.

Re: God's judgment
I mean "literal" in the common sense way that most normal people mean it; that you do not interpret the words, and do not add or subtract anything from them, but read them as they were written in a straightforward, simple way.
That's the version of literalism that arachnophilia uses. I rather like it myself. However, neither arachnophilia nor I are committed to scriptural inerrancy.
For fundamentalists, the primary principle is inerrancy. Then one reads the scripture as straightforwardly as possible, provided that such a reading does not contradict inerrancy. Whenever there is a conflict, one must come up with contorted interpretations that preserve inerrancy. This doesn't actually work, of course, but if people are into self-delusion they are able to persuade themselves that it works.
