I've only ever read two books in the Bible and neither of them were Genesis, so you'll have to excuse me if I'm talking nonsense here...
The fossil record supports Genesis sudden creation: species suddenly appear, change slightly over time THEN disappear.
Doesn't Genesis say everything was created within the space of a week as a one shot deal? Not repeated time and time again. It also doesn't say anything about organisms changing slightly over time that I've ever heard of.
As I understand it the idea of multiple special creations was thought of when the history of the Earth was first studied back in Victorian times (and before Darwin). Essentially people went out expecting to find proof of the Genesis account being literally true in the rocks.
When this proof wasn't found the idea of repeated creations followed by annihilations was proposed but was dropped because the evidence didn't support it.
I wish I didn't know now what I didn't know then
