I'm finishing up a bachelors in History and Philosophy of Science at the University of Pittsburgh (I recently got a biology degree from there). I do private tutoring, which pays well but the hours are erratic.
Also, I wash dishes at a nearby (right below my apartment) restuarant.
Hopefully once I finish my HPS degree, I'll get promoted to server! A boy can dream...
[edit]Oh yeah...I bring pendantry - often times erroneous and distracting.

Which restaurant?
The Pleasure Bar in Bloomfield. It used to be quite popular back in Pittsburgh's heyday in the 70's; the Pirates would always hang out there.
My great grandfather actually started it in the 60's, but sold it in the 80's. I think they let me work there because they get some delight out of having the original owner's family work for them (we sold it to a 'rival' family, or something along those lines).

Oh, no, you have got to be KIDDING me! I've eaten there a lot, since my husband and I lived in Friendship on Graham Street. Love the baked ziti and the potato balls!
I recommend the shrimp alfredo, but its all (pretty) good. My good friend lives on Graham street right now, btw.

Lemme guess you sold it to the family that owns Dell's down the street, didn't you?
Yes, sigh. CURSE THE M******!

My mother lived above the Pleasure Bar over 40 years ago when she was a student at West Penn nursing school! She tells stories of the owner picking her up and sitting her on the counter (she was tiny then as now, under 100 pounds).
I am willing to be that that was your grandfather!
It would seem so. If he wore a fedora and looked like a gentle mobster, then its definately him. He was also her landlord, I believe, since he owned the entire building.

Small world.
You know what they say: no matter where you go, even in the far reaches of cyberspace, Pittsburghers will find each other.

What a nice story!
Yes, and very surreal the more that I think about it.
Nator, thanks for sharing your mom's memory. Out of all my grandparents I probably regret not having more time to spend with him, so any story about the kind of man he was is nice to know.
And thinking more about it, his death from bone cancer when I was 10 got me thinking about the "problem of suffering or evil" and started my way towards atheism, then towards science books, then internet forums, and presently at EvC. Strange connections...
