Re: The Future Of EvC
Percy has been too busy to respond, but I'd imagine that he agrees with you in that keeping everything is the best approach. Perhaps its just a pet peeve of mine...but the storage space is adequate to keep it all...

If one is browsing an old archive, the less clutter there is the easier it is to find the good stuff...but I throw out old bills over 6 months old while some people save that stuff forever...and I'm a packrat in my own affairs in other ways....

I think one set of threads you can get rid of would be the proposed new threads when they are promoted -- the promotion post says "moved to ___" but in reality it is just copied.

Enjoy

Are you sure?

I'm really asking, because I don't know.
It's quite possible you're correct, it is the basic answer.

However, it certainly is possible to code the display-and-database software in such a way that it looks like this, and the data is not "copied" in any way. Simply using different pointers for different portions of the data in different locations. (One section only points to the beginning data, where another section points to all the data). It would appear copied to the user... but in reality it is not.

There would still be the additional "data" to hold the extra pointers... but this is negligible when compared to storing the "data" for copying the text.

Yes, unix (and I believe the forum is on a unix server if memory serves), and you can have multiple addresses for the same files. I used to work in a unix based cad system. But I don't know if you can limit that access to part of a file.

On a similar note, I would like to see the promotion just be a clean single post and not carry all the proposed commentary ... if they are kept separate.

Enjoy
