I'm in your age cohort, Omni. My mother died of polio in 1952, a bit before Dr. Salk came out with his vaccine. I had measles, whooping cough, chickenpox, etc., as a kid before they found effective protection against those.
I enthusiastically support compulsory vaccination with only legitimate medical exemptions.

Re: The Good Old Days
^ That.
Fortunately, that is all expunged from my memory. But I have seen some photographs.

But I also hear from the younger generation that today's vaccinations have additives that they don't want to risk giving to their children because they supposedly cause medical problems of their own. I haven't researched this but since this is the reason they resist vaccinating their children these worries have to be answered better than they have been so far.
The younger generation needs to get more of their information from, y'know, medical professionals instead of actresses and random internet posters.
Since 2001, with the exception of some influenza (flu) vaccines, thimerosal is not used as a preservative in routinely recommended childhood vaccines.
Thimerosal is a mercury-containing preservative used in some vaccines and other products since the 1930's. There is no convincing evidence of harm caused by the low doses of thimerosal in vaccines, except for minor reactions like redness and swelling at the injection site. However, in July 1999, the Public Health Service agencies, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and vaccine manufacturers agreed that thimerosal should be reduced or eliminated in vaccines as a precautionary measure.
That's from the Centers for Disease Control, and it indicates that the Scary Additive thimerosal was what you and Omni and I got in our vaccines, not what kids today are getting.

Re: additives smadatives
And stood in line at the Thom McAn shoe store to x-ray our feet and watch our toes wiggle.
Heh! There was an old guy in Duncan, Oklahoma who had both feet amputated due to cancer. He had owned the Thom McAn store, and apparently loved to demonstrate to all the little kids and their mommies that, "no, it won't hurt you a bit! See my toes??"
Anyway, after the amputations, he told new acquaintances, "I already have both feet in the grave!"
Edited by Coragyps, : No reason given.

I'm sure I could find research that claims adverse effects are statistically minimal or even worth it...
I gave you CDC links to some way at the start of the thread.
One of my coworkers had his entire family quarentined this last week for whooping cough. I haven't asked, but I wonder if he bothered to get shots for his preschool kids? When I had that crap, back before they had a vaccine for it, I was greatly displeased.

Faith, there is already sodium bicarbonate in your bloodstream. Without it you would be dead of acidosis or alkilosis. It keeps your pH where it needs to be, like it does for all the water in the ocean.

My mother died of polio a couple of years before Dr Salk's vaccine came out. I'm sort of a fan of vaccines. I wish measles vaccine had been available in 1960 - I damn sure didn't enjoy my two weeks in bed from it in '61.
And I'm an organic chemist by profession. I know a smattering about toxicity of quite a few things, and I feel like I'm fair at balancing hazards of various actions.

Sometimes I find myself wishing one of you self-righteous know-it-alls would have the experience of somebody close to you having a serious adverse reaction to a vaccine and knowing it.
Hey, Faith: I had the experience of seeing my mother in an Iron Lung and then losing her to polio when I was a toddler. Because there was no vaccine yet.....
I don't wish that on you, or even on Donald Trump. Hell, not even on Dick Cheney.

Re: a few points from the movie Trace Amounts
With the number of owies that I had painted with merthiolate back before 1960, a significant toxicity in the parts per billion would have had me dead a long time ago.
Now I am thinking about staying out of airplanes, trains, and highway vehicles of any sort until they are all shown to be safe. Oxcarts have, I think, been sufficiently vetted to be regarded as safe as long as the roads they use are pedestrian and oxcart only, but my grandchildren, at least, don't seem that enthused about moving to backwoods Guatemala. Even though they have pretty widespread vaccination programs there, there's something about internet connections.....
