Inline event-based scripting
Well...
Happened to be going through old threads, trying to reply to posts I may have missed. Got around to the thread that led to me reporting these problems... here's a little notification of something I thought of:
This block changes the background color to red:
Check the source for this block. When you allow HTML, you allow inline, event-based scripting. There are a lot of objects with a lot of events.
I can use the inline scripting to manipulate any HTML objects (hidden or visible, for content or appearance) to my liking. Just food for thought.
This block removes your banner image, and replaces it with my own.
P.S. If you don't laugh after seeing this, ... lol. I couldn't even imagine.
P.P.S. Feel free to edit this post to turn off these scripts.
Ben

Re: Inline event-based scripting
Good catch! You're in the running for Golden Glove!
Filtering out renegade HTML and JavaScript is a challenge. Short of getting rigorous and adding an HTML parser, it's sort of catch as catch can.
There's one new feature that I'm not sure anyone has taken a careful look at yet. There's an "unread messages" indicator in the form of a little blue dot that appears in the left hand column next to threads and forums. For a forum, the blue dot is turned on when the forum has threads with messages newer than your last visit to those threads. For a thread, the blue dot is turned on when the thread has posts newer than your last visit to that thread. It appears to be working, but I haven't been using the board very much.
As near as I can tell, this "unread message" indicator represents an innovation in the bulletin board software genre. Most boards will give you an indication about whether forums and threads have new messages since your last session, but they won't turn the indicators on and off during your session as you read messages and as new messages are posted.

Re: Inline event-based scripting
It's possible you can just filter all attributes on tags that start with "on." That should be pretty easy to filter.
I'll take a look at the "unread messages" indicator as I continue to try and catch up on some threads. The logic is pretty straightforward, so I should be able to pay attention without much trouble.

Logging in glitch
I think the log in procedure was working correctly for me, but it is not quite so.
In trying to fix the situation, I have deleted my cookies at least twice. At least once via the forum method, and at least once directly via the Firefox browser.
I noted that all my profile settings seemed to have been preserved, even when I deleted my cookies. I thought at least some of this was saved via cookie? For example, my "60 topics per page" setting was always preserved. Or am I having a "cached version" problem?
I had been having to log in ever session, despite having checked the little "remember log in" box at the log in page. I recently noticed that the profile page "Save Login" box remained set to "no", despite what I did in the "remember log in". I have now selected "yes" for the "Save Login", and things seem fine.
I have sometimes been alternating between Adminnemooseus and minnemooseus as my log in ID. Wonder if this causes quirks?

Re: Logging in glitch
All static user settings, like "topics per page", are now saved in persistent storage with the rest of the user profile.
All session related settings, like user name and session start time, are stored in cookies.
If your "save login" setting isn't being followed when you set it on the login page, then this is a bug. If I can reproduce this problem I'll fix it tonight.

HTML errors
Here are some basic HTML errors that I've found recently:
General:
  • when viewing a thread with IE, before the table loads, the screen shows a photo with a link at the bottom. The link says "Registe". That's a mis-spelling. This page usually disappears immediately (but today, it didn't, due to some internet problem)
http:///WebPages/AboutThisSite.html
  • Links to "Percipient" and "TrueCreation" are pre-dBoard.
http:///WebPages/SiteMap.html
  • Pretty much every link to the dynamic board area is pre-dBoard
http:///WebPages/GettingStarted.html
  • All links are old-school. Especially the link to the smilies.
http:///WebPages/ForumRules.html
  • You know what I'm going to say here...
I'm too lazy to check any more... I checked most but not all.
Ben

Linking problem
At http://EvC Forum: March, 2005, Posts of the Month -->EvC Forum: March, 2005, Posts of the Month
the following link was posted by Bob Gray:
http://EvC Forum: IC challenge: Evolve a bicycle into a motorcycle! -->EvC Forum: IC challenge: Evolve a bicycle into a motorcycle!
I presume he displays 20 messages per page, and the link works for him. But I display 15 messages per page, and for me message 41 and 58 are not on the same page - So I'm not linked to message 58.
I will edit the above link to become http://EvC Forum: IC challenge: Evolve a bicycle into a motorcycle! -->EvC Forum: IC challenge: Evolve a bicycle into a motorcycle!, which should work for everyone.

Searching by keyword and author
Dunno if this is a bug, feature, or just my failure to comprehend.
If I go to the search page looking for (let's say) Sylas's post with a list of evidence for the constancy of radioactive decay, and type "decay" into the "Search Words" box and "Sylas" into the "Search by User Name" box and hit "Perform Search", "decay" is ignored and I get all posts by Sylas.
Is this the designed behavior? It appears to me from the way that the boxes are grouped on the page that it should search for messages by Sylas which contain the word "decay". If the behavior is as-designed, perhaps there should be a group of boxes for search terms, with a perform-search button, and another group of boxes for user name, with its own perform-search button. That would make it clear that you can't search for both user name and content in one search.

I'm having a problem posting images. My images don't seem to appear using 'img' code (dbCodes), but does seem to work using the 'thumb' code (dbCodes).
Is it possible I am the only one not seeing the images and everyone else can?
I'll post an image here to see if others can see it:

Looks fine to me, but why are you posting naked photos of Angelina Jolie?

Seeing image fine
A couple of days ago I was having the problem of not having someones message image display. I right clicked (was using Firefox) on the little blank box, and then selected "display image". This displayed the image fine. Then, when I "backed" to the message page, the image there was also displayed properly. Maybe the image was just slow loading.

See it fine. It's your layered intrusive graphic. Here is your link code again:
Still shows up fine for me (using Firefox).

Hmmmmmmm... I am not seeing it. Not even a red box. But if everyone else can see it fine, I will edit my posts in the geo forum. It's much nicer not having to click on a link to see the photos. I think I'll check my Mozilla preferences and see if I missed something. Thanks!
By the way, I can't even see the link code you posted, either...
