One of the first movies ever made was pornographic. It was made for Thomas Edison, not long after he invented the motion picture. It was called "The Kiss".
The Kiss (also known as The May Irwin Kiss, The Rice-Irwin Kiss and The Widow Jones) is an 1896 actuality which was one of the first movies ever shown commercially to the public. It is barely twenty seconds long. The scene is a re-enactment of the kiss between May Irwin and John Rice, in the final scene of the stage musical The Widow Jones
The Kiss may have been the first movie ever publicly shown in Canada; it was projected onto a makeshift screen in West End Park, Ottawa, on July 21, 1896. It caused a scandalized uproar and occasioned disapproving newspaper editorials. |

It is substantiated. What is substantiated? 1) That you are a simple-minded idealogue who draws unsubstantiated connections in order to legislate and enforced code of morality? I agree. 2) That we need protection from such types? I agree. 3) That porn creates serial killers? No. That has actually been proven completely false and if anything there is a positive correlation between religious zealotry or repressed sexual environments and serial killers. If you want to believe Bundy you should look into his religious upbringing as well as other famous serial killers the religious right doesn't want to discuss, the ones that carefully explain their Xian upbringing caused their problems. holmes "...what a fool believes he sees, no wise man has the power to reason away.."(D. Wish the Founders would come back and tell you guys a thing or two. Did you mean the Founder who had sex with slaves, or the Founder known for high-profile sexual escapades with foreign women, or the Founder who frequented underground sex clubs, or the Founder who died of a sexually transmitted disease acquired from an extra-marital affair? Those Founders?

Arguing that pornography should be banned because Ted Bundy killed people is bit like arguing that Christianity should be banned because Daniel Corogeanu crucified a nun. Some people are just plain nuts, and will find an outlet where they can.

Here's a hint - he's on the one-dollar bill. He died of syphillis, but Mrs. One-Dollar-Bill never had it.

I'd like to know what sites you run. You're new so you may not know that my gf is, or I should say was at this point, in the porn biz. I don't want to get any more specific who we are or where you might have seen her... or perhaps us? But the fact is this really is about free speech and impacts more than porn. As a tool this can be used against other media, regulate it into submission. And the fact is that there are nonpornographic movies (movies that are not for just pleasure of watching sex), that contain material which is sexual and so get covered by this legislation. I already gave examples of this kind of movie such as Realm of the Senses. I will admit I am in a movie of that kind... nonporn but with some graphic sexual content... and now must fill out some very detailed records so the govt can keep tabs on me, despite clearly being beyond 17 years old. holmes "...what a fool believes he sees, no wise man has the power to reason away.."(D. When the man's smoking major weed from his own plantation size stash, it's likely he may do some things he's not entirely responsible for. holmes "...what a fool believes he sees, no wise man has the power to reason away.."(D. How is Ted Bundy's own statement not a demonstration of the negative effects of pornography made by adults for adults? Oh, I don't know - maybe because he was fucking crazy? I mean, seriously - what made you think that the opinion of an insane madman psycho killer constituted a legitimate source in this debate? I wonder about you, Tal, I really do. Please tell me that they keep you far, far away from the guns.

I'd be suprised if the administration was really trying to shut down the industry - Not for any quaint reasons about morality or the first amendment (since when did Bush care about them?) but simply because it's a big industry that makes money - Porn is probably a bigger export than cluster munitions, and there's no obvious move to shut down the ordinance firms because kids get their legs blown off.
And it's nice to see steps being taken to reduce the exploitation of minors and immigrants (which, no matter how rose-tinted your glasses are, you have to admit is both endemic and immoral). Having said that, I'd agree that the adressing and labling issue is going to cause all sorts of problems, as will the burden on second-tier distributors. I would have thought a central, federally-operated registry of all parties (funded pro-forma by the industry) would have been easier, cheaper and more secure: all you'd need on the material itself would be a file reference. But then, when did common sense have anything to do with government?

TTBOMK that is but an urban legend. Do you have anything supportive of this theory?

quote: I think that Holmes might have already touched on this, but this kind of record-keeping nonsense probably won't have much of an effect on large corporate entities, who already have on the payroll teams of lawyers and accountants who do this sort of thing. The ones most affected will be the small businesses -- which shouldn't be too surprising considering the contempt for small business that the Republicans have shown for the last few decades.

I was actually expecting someone to try and toe the party line and explain why this kind of legislation is useful according to the reasons given for the legislation.
It has surprised me to some extent to see people... except Tal, who I expect nothing better from at this point... take up my sarcastic request that they defend the attacks on sexual content using backdoor methods. Indeed that has been the only defense given so far. Are people really not concerned about setting a precedent of allowing the government to put in place regulations on legal speech to hinder people's ability to communicate? I'd like to give those who responded a second chance to look at their arguments again and this legislation, and address if this is really what they are for and defend the mechanism not the particular goal... though you can argue some content is worthy of that mechanism rather than others if you have some sort of criteria beyond "I like/I don't like". This is not supposed to be just a put down people that don't like porn thread, as there are ramifications beyond it. holmes "...what a fool believes he sees, no wise man has the power to reason away.."(D.
