This going to be the third time I ask this question. Why is it that you people always say you support civil union for gay people yet always seem to try to pass legislations that not only ban gay marriage but also ALL forms of unions for gay people? The 2 or so dozen states that have an amendment banning gay marriage also ban all forms of legal unions for gay people.
If they had any grace at all they'd give it a break. That's why I support gay civil unions. Calling that "marriage," however, flies in the face of tradition.
Interracial marriage, not too long ago, flew in the face of tradition. A judge in Virginia in 1958 even said:
quote: The couple on trial were sentenced to 1 year in prison for loving and marrying each other. Even though the sentence was later overturned and they were given a lighter sentence... banishment from Virginia, you can obviously see the hate that was involved in the matter. Tradition? If you value the traditional sense of marriage that much, shouldn't you be out there picking on people like my cousin who married a Asian girl?
That's why I support gay civil unions.
But Hoot, every freakin state that has a gay marriage ban also has a ban on all forms of gay union that even remotely resemble marriage. Personally, I think you're just lying about supporting the civil union thing knowing it ain't gonna go anywhere anytime soon. AKA G.A.S.B.Y. George Absolutely Stupid Bush the Younger

You know that you have a gift for avoiding the point?

The reason I said you have a gift for avoiding the point is because the point is you have no real reason why you don't want gays to be married. You even showed us early on that you thought homosexuality could be treated like a disease and that "curing" homosexuality would solve everything.
You never had any valid reason why you don't like gays. You never had any valid reason why you don't want them to get married. You then proceeded with your bigotry (yes, just don't argue, it is bigotry) and tried to come up with one reason after another to justify your bigotry. You admitted that we shot you down with your tradition argument. You, then, proceeded to use the so-called "original intentions of the framers of the constitution" which we've shot down also. If we continue in this vein, I'm pretty sure we're going to start seeing things like "gays can't reproduce... gays have gay-pride parades... gays don't like women..." If you simply say "I don't know why but I simply don't want them to get married..." I would have left you to your bigotry. My aunt used this same line and I haven't bothered her since. AKA G.A.S.B.Y. What civil union rights? Memory problem? Again, if the gays want to call themselves "married," that's OK with me. However, I don't think there needs to be laws for that, especially if civil-union rights are available to them. AKA G.A.S.B.Y. George Absolutely Stupid Bush the Younger

Perhaps interracial couples would have been better off if they didn't seek out "marriage" and simply stayed with "civil union"? Why not create a type of legal agreement that marriage would be a subset of and then let gays enjoy the benefits of the newly created type of legal agreement? This wouldn't be seperate from marriage as marriage would be a part of it (marriage would be one type of the agrement), and it also wouldn't change what marriage is.

Different words but same line of excuse made back in the old days. I can't fake being black like I could fake being gay.
If I am prejudiced against, say, people with no wisdom teeth, I'm sure I can come up with some excuse like the one you came up with to prevent them from getting dental insurance. AKA G.A.S.B.Y. George Absolutely Stupid Bush the Younger

Of course. The fact that he completely avoided the quote I provided regarding a judge's decision in interracial marriage should be telling enough. You know how sometimes you believe in something but you know people are going to jump all over you for it so you just try to change the subject or ignore it everytime it comes up?

I have a friend whose parents are both gay. Both her father and mother were raised up to be conservative republicans. Her father was raised to be a good husband and her mother a good house wife. Some time after my friend was born, both her parents came to some kind of revelation and both came out. They are still living together and they each have a gay relationship out of marriage. And coincidently, they don't believe in god anymore.
Two points I want to make. For now they are faking their marriage just for the benefits. But the more important point is they were forced into this fake marriage by society, family, friends, and religion. They were taught that being gay was somehow wrong and all of that crap, so they had to grow up denying a very important part of their lives. Just imagine how miserable they were in their fake relationship before they decided to stop denying who they were. I'm just glad they came to their senses and decided to exercise their constitutional rights of pursuit of happiness. AKA G.A.S.B.Y. George Absolutely Stupid Bush the Younger

For the fourth time, every state that has a ban on gay marriage also has a ban on all forms of union that even remotely resemble marriage, and that includes your so-called civil union. If civil union is effectively available to gays then they have a choice to be civially united, or not. But why should gays insist that "marriage" must legally apply to everybody who is civilly united or otherwise, whether or not he or she wants it to? Why do gay people insist on marriage? Because they have been backed into a corner by all these laws that not only ban gay marriage but also any form of union that resemble marriage. AKA G.A.S.B.Y.
