Certainly far closer to Goldwater than any current ones but more between AuH2O and Nelson Rockefeller. I imagine either would be considered as far left these days.

quote: That happens to be complete bullshit as usual and a total misrepresentation of the facts. Today's so called Republicans (every since the coup by the Christian Cult of Ignorance that installed the pathetic puppet known as Ronald Reagan in office) has totally abandoned the ethics and principles that made it the Grand Old Party. Today is is simply another way to move money out of the gullible, pitiful Christian Cult of Ignorance and hopefully pick the pockets of everyone else too. There is no issue of liberalism in the US and has not been for a half a century, the issue is between Conservatives and the Fascist Republican Party. It is not a matter of atheism, it is Christianity and everything else against the Christian Cult of Ignorance. Public education is at least an attempt to avoid the Avoidance mind crippling that is the hallmark of the Christian Cult of Ignorance and their avoidance schools. So Nancy Pelosi, Barney Frank, Chuck Schumer, and Obama are all conservatives? If you told them that, do you think they'd agree? Sorry, but words have meanings - to effectively communicate they have to be used in ways that society generally accepts them. Yes, very much conservatives, but not Facists. I been there, I remember Hubert Humphrey. I really can't help it if the Christian Cult of Ignorance is also ignorant of the meaning of words or the ethics that helped create the Grand Old Party. Actually, fifty years ago universal healthcare certainly was a major issue, and in fact it was something that Richard Nixon tried to get enacted.

Today's Republican Party is quite simply, ignorant; ignorant of reality, of history, of the meaning of words and their historic usage, of the very basis even of the Republican Party.
As a long time Republican I find that sad and pitiful; the Grand Old Party has been reduced to a mob with but one battle cry... "What's in it for me?" Even there they are far too ignorant to even understand that their very actions simply assure their failure over the long term. It is little more than hero worship and demagoguery. It has become a party bereft of ethics or morality dedicated to perpetrating ignorance and fascism. Anyone so limited that they can only spell a word one way is severely handicapped!

Courts sometimes take children away from Dangerous Parents. The key word is dangerous. Anyone so limited that they can only spell a word one way is severely handicapped!

And so far you have not shown that racism is a justification. In each case it was not the racism that was the issue but rather that the acts of the parents as opposed to their beliefs were what was significant.
It is the physical threat to the child, not the motivation, that is significant. Sorry but so far you have not been very convincing. AbE: Let me add that the court can also consider threats to others as well as directly to the child, but it is still not simply racist parents teaching racism. Edited by jar, : add threat to others Anyone so limited that they can only spell a word one way is severely handicapped!

Winnipeg is NOT in the US last time I looked.
Again, I have not said parental rights are absolute. Speech and belief though is very highly protected. Anyone so limited that they can only spell a word one way is severely handicapped!

Is the con man ignorant, or is the ignorance found in those who are conned? The con man is smart enough to know that his audience wants to be fooled, and that they are too ignorant to know they are being conned.

Shouldn't we be asking that question with respect to public policy? You may be referring to a very narrow and myopic view in which case it is a fair criticism. However, I do believe that we would be better off if people did ask this question more often and if they demanded an answer that went beyond talking points and buzzwords. No, being a citizen requires that we go beyond just what is good for "me", for the personal individual, and look towards what will be good for society. We are our brothers keepers. And the "Us" should be expanded based on the specifics of the issue.

Of course it is allowable. In fact I'd say it was essential.

marc9000 writes: LOL. Too funny. In what way is Social Security a program 'of questionable constitutional authority'? I cannot undertake to lay my finger on that article of the Constitution which granted a right to Congress to impose a mandatory income confiscation system for a government run retirement system. There's also no evidence that FDR consulted the people about it, which the 10th amendment requires. That's because you likely have never read the Constitution. It is Article 1 Section 8.

crashfrog writes: The First Amendment protects speech, it protects assembly, but it doesn't grant a right to anyone to force another person to listen to speech or assemble - not even the child of a parent. HUH? Utter nonsense Froggie, children do not have the right to NOT hear what their parents say. Or what their teachers say. Or what their pastors say. Children do NOT have equal rights.
