But actually birthers make up only a fraction of the tea party ... Only a minority of TPs think he was born in the US, according to opinion polls. So "a fraction" yes, but one that's greater than 1/2.

I tried to make a similar distinction in another thread - that fascists may not necessarily be bullies even if they do tend to attract bullies. Subtlty often doesn't fly very high at EvC. The tar brush is wide.
I think there is an important distinction between an organization that is racist, as opposed to an organization that contains or indeed even attracts racists.

Herman Cain was initially quite the favorite of the Tea Party. Perhaps we should note that when calling them racists.

This is no different than when a racist excuses his racism by claiming he has friends that are black. So...TP opposes Obama because he's black. This means they're racist. TP supports Cain despite the fact he's black. This means they're racist. If both the positive and negative observation support the same hypothesis, the logical conclusion is that the observation is incidental, and not causal. When's the last time, do you think, that the KKK, an actual racist organization, supported a black candidate for any public office? As an alternative hypothesis, did it ever occur to you that the Tea Party could attract racists and Randian libertarians for separate reasons, despite overlap between the two groups? That hypothesis would seem to fit better with the seemingly contradictory evidence of opposition of one person for his race, and support for another candidate despite being of that same race. Some members of the Tea Party are racist. Some are not. It seems inaccurate to identify the Tea Party as a racist organization when racism is not a prerequisite of membership, racist policies are not among the stated goals of the organization, and the organization has supported black candidates in the past. The human understanding when it has once adopted an opinion (either as being the received opinion or as being agreeable to itself) draws all things else to support and agree with it. - Francis Bacon "There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs." - John Rogers A world that can be explained even with bad reasons is a familiar world. But, on the other hand, in a universe suddenly divested of illusions and lights, man feels an alien, a stranger. His exile is without remedy since he is deprived of the memory of a lost home or the hope of a promised land. This divorce between man and his life, the actor and his setting, is properly the feeling of absurdity. — Albert Camus "...the pious hope that by combining numerous little turds of variously tainted data, one can obtain a valuable result; but in fact, the outcome is merely a larger than average pile of shit." - Barash, David 1995... "Many that live deserve death. And some die that deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then be not too eager to deal out death in the name of justice, fearing for your own safety. Even the wise cannot see all ends." - Gandalf, J. R. R. Tolkien: The Lord Of the Rings

I sometimes wonder what it would be like if McCain and Palin had won the election of 2008.
Palin a admitted Tea Party supporter and McCain a Neocon. So lets look back, the economy tanked and the U.S. was engaged in two wars. We were on the brink of a depression and the U.S. has lost all credibility globally. If Obama had not won that election would would all be eating beans and greens grown from our back yards, taxes would be collected to support our wars abroad and we would be living in a feckless theocratic police state. Ok may not that bad but you get my point. "You were not there for the beginning. You will not be there for the end. Your knowledge of what is going on can only be superficial and relative" William S. As an alternative hypothesis, did it ever occur to you that the Tea Party could attract racists and Randian libertarians for separate reasons, despite overlap between the two groups? I would suggest that anyone attracted to the Tea Party because they were actually libertarians is a clueless idiot. I'd also wonder if they'd actually read The Fountainhead or Atlas Shrugged. But yes there are some political ideas other than hatred of Obama as a human being involved, so I'll instead pretend that you had suggested one of those ideas. I see your point. So as soon as the Tea Party kicks the racists to the curb, maybe their rep as something other than haters will improve. I think this is vastly oversimplifying the situation. While there are some tea party members who are racist, and others who are not... if you look at the makeup of the party, the percentage of members of the Tea Party who are very vocal racists is much higher than the general population. I think the reason is that both racists and conservatives tend to be much more susceptible to fear tactics, and the negative 'the world is being destroyed ' message is the one the tea party buys into. So, while the tea party might not be a racist organization per say, because of the fear tactics that it employs, it attracts a higher percentage of people who ARE racist.

Well, this could be interesting; finally we may see that today's Republican Party has nothing to do with the Grand Old Party and is solely made up of Nutjobs (Tea Party) and the worst of Capitalism, true Fascists.

I think the reason is that both racists and conservatives tend to be much more susceptible to fear tactics, and the negative 'the world is being destroyed ' message is the one the tea party buys into. I think it's simpler than that. The Tea Party doesn't shy away from anti-Obama politics and other rhetoric that is non-racist on its face. For example, the line between strong anti-immigration policy and xenophobia can be really blurry. That politics is going to resonate with racists. So that's where the racists going to hang. So, while the tea party might not be a racist organization per say, because of the fear tactics that it employs, it attracts a higher percentage of people who ARE racist. We may view them as racist, but they don't consider themselves as such. They'll trot out their favorite conservative who happens to be black & carry on without incident. As I said before, Dr. Carson is a perfect icon for TPers & has just signed on with Fox News, & we know how many former & future presidential candidates use that media platform. I think Sean Hannity is racist, but he just points to his "vote for Carson in a minute" speech & blythly carries on inciting Tea Party fear. And so, the other racists lurking in that group have their cover. So what, we think there might be a higher percentage of racists teabagging? They've convinced themselves otherwise. They hate progressive ideas. They're afraid of progress & the loss of white male American power. The crazy allegations will follow any liberal seeking the White House. Calling out the crazy, instead of the particular theme in use, is more compelling in talking to the fuzzy middle of American politics. IMHO.
