Here's some more food for the vultures:
quote: Police danced with this guy for hours, despite him having several knives and a gun, and even shooting an officer. They finally led him to the slammer fully alive. Were they going easy on him because he was white? Because he clearly suffered some mental handicap? I'm sure everyone will have their opinions. JonLove your enemies! |

The public response to two recent events seems to suggest that Americans are in love with the word 'racism', even when such accusations are difficult to support:
quote: What is the message protestors are trying to send to the police? What didn't justify the use of deadly force? And then there's this, even more ridiculous:
quote: What's the cause for outrage? Should people not sing along to rap songs containing derogatory language? And why nothing to be said of the song's artist? Here are the lyrics:This shit sound like 007 on N64 and shit Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah James Gold all in my chain, gold all in my ringGold all in my watch Don't believe me, just watch Nigga nigga nigga Don't believe me, just watch Don't believe me, just watch Nigga nigga nigga Don't believe me, just watch Don't believe me, just watch Gold all in my chain, gold all in my ring Gold all in my watch, don't believe me just watch This ain't for no fuck niggaIf you a real nigga then fuck with me This one for the hood niggas Hipster bitches that shop at Lenox Dark skinned, light skinned, Asian and White women Hypebeasts we know aboutchea' Don't buy shoes unless they popula' For the hoes, my nigga That's pussy popping at Magic City Got that strong, my nigga Then come match that shit with me Smoking mid, my nigga Then don't pass that shit to me This one for my niggas And bitches bout that money, (Cash Out) Gotta love, Chesire Bridge Them bad hoes at Onyx I don't fuck with no snitches So don't tell me who telling This one for them colleges Them bad hoes at Spelman Shout out to them freshmen On Instagram straight flexin' Popped a molly, I'm sweatin', woo Popped a molly, I'm sweatin', woo Momma always told me, Boy, count your blessings In God I Trust, so I kept counting them Franklins I'm too fly, you know this Lemme give your ass a checklist One gold watch, two gold chains Six gold rings, it's nothing, God Dayum OG Jordans, them high socks No shirt on, I'm stunting, okay And this song for them fuck niggas Who hating on you this summer, fuck em Talk shit behind your back But won't say shit in public, fuck em — Trinidad James "All Gold Everything" from Genius.com Is America going nuts over shouting 'racism'? Does it just make for good news? Do people just love the drama? Most importantly, what affect might this over-zealous jump to 'racism' have on our ability as a nation to have an honest and realistic discussion about race-related problems in our country?Love your enemies!

What's with the video? There are certainly real instance of racism.
That doesn't mean all accusations of racism are true.
All we can do is listen and learn on a human level. One side doing all the talking and one side doing all the listening does not a discussion make.Love your enemies!

There have been many accusations, and increasing polarization instead. Yes. Reaching back to my linguistic studies, research has shown that African American Vernacular English (AAVE) and General American English (GAE) have been growing more and more dissimilar, suggesting that our country is becoming increasingly divided on racial grounds. Whatever's being done is clearly not working.
This serves the interests of a few, but not the country as a whole. It doesn't even serve the interests of the majority of the black community, but rather a few of its most vocal members who benefit from their time in the spotlight inciting rage and hatred between people of different races. Everyone else just suffers from the increasing tension, fear, misinformation, and division.Love your enemies!

One statistic stuck in my head. In this generation a black man in the USA has a 33% chance of finding himself in prison. And part of an honest discussion involves asking how much of this is related to racism, how much is related to general economic inequality (poverty increases crime) and what role race plays in this, and how much is related to laws criminalizing ridiculous things. It is important that we correctly identify underlying causes or the problems will never find themselves fixed. Edited by Jon, : No reason given.Love your enemies!

If you're the house mom of a frat that has songs dedicated to them not allowing black people, then its not a stretch to think that you laughing and singing a rap song's lyrics stems from racism rather than your love of the genre. Nonsense. First, there were never songs dedicated to the fraternity; it was something made up by the kids in that chapter. Their actions were inexcusable but that has little to do with the old woman singing rap songs. She might be racist, but her singalong video doesn't demonstrate that she is. And even if she is racist, what of it? People are free to be racists. If she loses her position as the house mom it should be as much because she let the kids she was supposed to supervise ban black people from their chapter as because she herself might be racist. No problem with that as an ideal, but it's hard to avoid a preliminary conclusion that race is a prime indicator. Perhaps. But I believe statistics that adjust for poverty and similar factors show considerably less racial prejudice regarding arrests and imprisonments. I might be wrong... These things cannot be ignored.Love your enemies!

But if a majority of them are, does it matter that a few are not? Of course! What the hell kind of nonsense is this?
And can you even imagine the number of instances of covert racism that are not called out? Luckily I don't have to. Even in the Coffee House forum, evidence reigns supreme.
Most of us honkies never have, or never want, to take the time to learn, to sit down with your friends and ask the questions, to hear the stories. What surprised me most was, after a number of such talks, I began to notice the instances, some subtle some not, that I would never have noticed before. And when I moved to Arizona I recognized the same instances by whites toward Hispanics and Natives. I'm sure we'd all appreciate you sharing some specifics on this.
... , you cannot know. If that's true, then all is hopeless.
You haven't taken the time to learn, you cannot judge. I'm not judging. Edited by Jon, : No reason given.Love your enemies!

We have a justice system where prosecutors are rewarded for getting convictions, rather than for getting at the truth. And that, not racism, is the biggest part of the problem. Once they've pegged you, you're ready to go to jail unless you've got lots of money to defend yourself.Love your enemies!

One of the problems is that certain minorities are just more likely to be pegged than others. That problem happens well before the court room.
THe way our current justice department works, a white middle class kid getting caught with pot will be given a slap on the wrist for a first time offense, but it is much more likely that a black kid of the same age would get prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law for a first time non-violent offense. It'd be interesting to see statistics that break the matter down at each level: search, arrest, arraignment, conviction. The proportion of black convictions is higher than white convictions, but what's the proportion of black arrests? I have a feeling that we would see that once the matter comes to court, skin color doesn't change the statistics as much (granted juries have their own biases), except perhaps for the sentencing. I think at that point what matters most is how much money you have. If so, it would mean that fixing the problem in the courts requires a different approach than that required for fixing the problem regarding arrest.Love your enemies!

Nobody has mentioned the murder of the black man Walter Scott by officer Slager after a routine traffic stop. Another Police Shooting It's hard to say whether it was racism or not. More information has been coming to light since the news first broke. It is almost certain that the cop was 100% in the wrong. If he had any fear for his life, it was certainly misplaced. But again, it's not clear if his actions were race-motivated. Edited by Jon, : highlight linkLove your enemies!

How much does it cost for the chance to shoot an unarmed black man? Ask insurance company executive Robert Bates; he'll be able to tell you.
quote: Okay, so using his gun was a 'mistake' and he was technically only paying for a chance at tasing himself some black folk, but still, what the fuck?Love your enemies! |
