Author | Topic: Why wasnt jesus married ? | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Can anyone help ? Why wasnt jesus married. Surely a jewish man at this point in history would have been. Why no explanation to the contrary.
Perhaps this is another example of the bible's revisionism of the role of women in society. Would the admittance of jesus's union with a woman raise the fairer sex to a point of equality with man, and lower jesus from deity to man/philosepher. Surely this is a more acceptable truth, that men collated the bible (selecting which gospels to include), and elevated mans importance in order to increase both influence and power.

Actually Michael, Jesus was the one who talked with the Samarian woman when it was thought of as unacceptable, and also forgave the prostitute and healed women, this hardly shows us in-equality now does it. Also the Gospel in no way shows a sexist attitude.
I am going to guess that he wasn't married because he didn't come into the world for such purposes as a regular human life would. His bride is talked of in I think Revelation. Besides this, the importance we place on such things is maybe not what it would be with God, but that is only my opinion. Man was made to be with a woman - one flesh, but Christ is the son of God who became the son of man, he is not the father or the husband and in every scripture takes the role of the humble, lowering himself as as the greatest should do, showing a true example of greatness, and showing how service should be done, even HE came to serve us. Please know that this is only my opinion.

Jesus didn't get married because He didn't want to. He fulfilled the O.T. vow of a Nazarite : wholly dedicated to the will of God for His life.
IF you are insinuating that the Bible is unfair to women, then maybe this will make you reconsider : Women were the first persons to learn of the Resurrection. Women were the only persons that had the balls not to forsake Jesus while He was being crucified. Jesus commended the widow who gave her last two mites. It was a woman who poured the expensive ointment onto Jesus, then He proceeded to establish an eternal memorial of this event by declaring that wheresoever the gospel is preached, that is WHERESOEVER the gospel is preached the preacher MUST ALSO tell what this woman did to Jesus. (Matt.26:13) The point being is that the woman responded to being saved/forgiven by giving something that was expensive. If you are truly affected by the gospel then the giving of something costly proves it. Yet this memorial established by Christ for what the woman did is almost never preached hand in hand with the gospel.

Don't some churches teach that Mary Magdelene and Jesus were more than just friends? Some Christians believe she may have been his wife, but I think those beliefs are probably in the minority.

OK, i accept your points from the bible that women werent all bad, although i thought original sin was laid at their door (you will probably have a field day proving that wrong, what can i say, im a lapsed catholic) And blaming Eve for everything was a bit heavy handed on the big ones part.
So, seeing as how the bible was such a pro-woman read, why is it that there are no women catholic priests. Surely this is wrong, im sure i read once that Jesus made Mary Magdelene one of his disciples (i accept the term disciple may have been used in a some what looser form), so if the son of God saw fit for her to spread the word, why dont we allow it ?

Lots of people believe this, though its more to do with paganism than christianity. Da Vinci was supposed to believe this.

By your own admission - you are a Catholic - answer your own question.
By the way, Adam was punished too, he had to work the rest of his life. Eve's punishment was to have to serve the inferior (Adam/man), this in itself tells us what God thinks of women; they are superior, however, I go about life enforcing God's punishment by not allowing women so called "equal rights". I am a chauvinist and proud of it.

There's no indication in the NT that Jesus ever took the Nazarite vow. He not only drank but made wine which Nazarites were't allowed to do. Contrary to false art, Jesus evidently cut his hair as did the majority because Judas needed to point him out of a group of men. He looked like the rest of the group.
Women were the only persons that had the balls........ Mmmm...."balls?"

WT, I don't mean to run off topic, but in short, where do you come up with this stuff??

Why should Jesus marry when he knew that he'd be rejected of men and crucified? He had no certain home to keep a woman and for a woman to keep. He was a divine person on a divine mission and marriage wasn't to be in that role.

The Bible does say that he was "fishing for men"...probably gay.

WT, I don't mean to run off topic, but in short, where do you come up with this stuff?? I presume that his thought process went something like this: being made to serve someone is only punishment if you weren't made to serve them in the first place. Ergo if Eve's punishment is for her and her line to serve men, then that can only be because it's a reversal of what was supposed to be - men serving women. I dunno - makes about as much sense as women being made to serve men, I guess. Neither position seems to bear much connection to reality as far as I've seen.

Infact, didn't we show numerous examples of how Jesus treated women? I fail to see how WT can justify his chauvinist position on a biblical basis. infact Christ's position was clear - everyone should serve everyone, and he went about doing that, to gentiles aswell.
