You didn't provide a link.
There is no thread in which jar has posted recently that has somewhere around 179 messages. There is no thread in which jar has posted recently that is closed. Is this an old thread? {Note - I think the "179" was a typo, and should have been "279". Anyway, the topic was reopend. - AM} Edited by Adminnemooseus, : See above

No, it is my belief statement in columnists corner. For some reason Phat closed it. I reopened it.

He did get suspended, even before you did. I got suspended? I can't tell which thread Iano is talking about. I never even knew I got suspended and don't find a post discribing it in the suspensions thread. Guess I've been driving while talking on the cell phone. I certainly haven't been drinking. This was all news to me. Actually, I didn't know Iano had been suspended either. lfen

I posted a topic warning at Message 91. You ignored that warning in Message 92, and were suspended for 1 hour. A small red mark showed next to your name, and if you allowed your mouse to hover over that text, you would have seen the suspension reason as
Ignored topic warning. If you never tried to post during that one hour, you might not have noticed the suspension. To comment on moderation procedures or respond to admin messages:

I'm thinking of modifying the way suspensions work. The change would be that the clock wouldn't start ticking until the next time the suspendee accesses the site.

Well, then let me just add an explanation.
I didn't see the warning the first time I posted as I was reading from midway and replied at that point in the thread, the warning was downstream and on the next page. Then I received an email notification that Iano had replied and clicked on the post and FireFox opened a tab at Iano's reply to me. I went right to replying to him and finished. Then in looking at that page I saw the warning at the top, this being the first I had seen it. So realizing that my post was off topic I went back and added a statement of my beliefs. So I'm guilty but the warning system is not always obvious or timely given the way I, and I suspect others, access threads is not stricly sequential. I don't know how this software works. It might be that if specific people are warned it could generate an email like it does for replies? As it happened the first I heard of the suspension was when I came across Iano complaining about it. I didn't even know what he was talking about and couldn't find it because the hour had expired long before I logged in again. lfen

Same happened me Lfen. I clicked to a response, the warning sat above out of view and I replied to your post. And got suspended.
The onus must probably be on the off topic poster to ensure there is no warning rather than admin figuring out ways to ensure the warning is seen. Let the off topic-er beware!

I see how easily off topic posts snowball. There is need of a warning. Some admins go so far as to put a "Do not reply to this offtopic post" in big colored letters in the off topic posts. I actually think that is the most effective approach although perhaps time consuming for the admins.

Instead of this constant need to warn, suspend, reinstate OT posters, is it possible to redirect offenders to 'Slugger`s Corner' where protagonists can maul each other to their heart`s content without disturbing the main thread? Just leave a post box with 'SC redirect' in place to show the way?

Any admins on duty who could perhaps give some guidance to The Critic?
S/he seems a little bit 'strange'. Brian.

Guido clearly violated forum guidelines...repeatedly. For a 14 year old who is immature, this is more likely than that of an adult.
I agree that we should not tolerate or condone Guidos behavior. I work with many kids like Guido, however, and am not in favor of a permenant suspension. Can we give him a few months and see if he matures any more? (Maybe even a year or so....) But I would like to have the opportunity to mentor Guido, should he come back. He DOES have some issues, and I would insist that he formally appologize beforehand.

I could not myself in good conscience recommend restoring Guido's privileges, and EvC Forum is not a department of New Jersey Social Services, which is really what needs to get involved.
Send him email, he also uses Yahoo Messenger.

After peeking at Charles' post in the "Is the TOE racist?" thread, I fail to see why it was hidden. It is basically a reminder to Rob to stay on topic. That Rob then gave an off-topic reply seems to me to be more of a problem with Rob than the way CK's post was written.
